Baby's birth captured in MRI movie for the first time

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

It's unlikely to be a comfortable place to deliver a baby, but now a video documents the first birth in an MRI machine. Christian Bamberg and a team from Charit? University Hospital in Berlin, Germany, announced the world first in December 2010, but the movie has only recently been released.

The video captures the active second stage of labour as the mother expels the fetus. The technique, called cinematic MRI, takes repeated images of the same slice of the body before joining them up to create an ultra-detailed video. It was recently turned on unborn twins for the first time to study a common complication where one fetus receives more of the blood supply and becomes much larger than the other.

By using MRI, the team was able to examine the relationship between the movement of the fetus and its position as it travels through the birth canal, which should help doctors better manage labour and delivery. In the future, the team also hopes to visualise the first stage of labour using the same technique, possibly using the videos to create virtual-reality computer training.

If you enjoyed this post, you might like to see a kung-fu fetus or watch a couple having sex in an MRI scanner.

You probably have received an email or two which was sent to you by a particular company or an online entrepreneur for the promotion of a particular product, right? Well, what if I tell you that marketing and promotions via the internet have gone to another level and have become much more interactive? There are already new and creative ways of advertising through the internet. One of which is video marketing.

What exactly is video marketing? Video marketing is a tool that is commonly used by people who are doing business online like selling products or services. This means that the advertisement or marketing is no longer just a simple text format but it already uses an actual video with footages, music and action.

Actually, it is beneficial not just for the internet marketers but also for the consumers. Why?

For the internet marketers, they benefit from video marketing because it allows them to target more potential customers and promote their business much better. With this, they can inform those people who are not really enthused by lengthy email promotions or articles. Customers become interested with the business because the videos usually catch more attention, if it is done properly, compared to the emails and articles. Aside from that, internet marketers are also able to establish rapport with their targeted market because they can either show their faces on the videos or maybe provide actual footages of the product. This is really good for business because it makes it easier to convince people to avail their product or services. Hence, internet marketers are able to make their businesses progress more with the help of video marketing.

For the consumers, they also benefit from it because it saves them the effort of having to read all the email promotions and website articles. Usually, materials that are made for are interesting and lively so as to captivate the viewers. Also, since customers are able to see the actual person who is involved in the business or maybe see the product demonstration, it is easier for them to assess if they should avail the product or not.

It is a good thing that video marketing was finally introduced because it contributes a lot for online business and transactions. ?

ORNL home to new battery manufacturing R&D facility

Future automotive batteries could cost less and pack more power because of a new manufacturing research and development facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The $3 million Department of Energy facility allows for collaboration with industry and other national labs while protecting intellectual property of industrial partners. The laboratory is attracting battery manufacturers, chemical and materials suppliers, system integrators and original equipment manufacturers.

"We're able to integrate advanced material components into a complete battery, analyze how it perform and better understand how to improve it," said Claus Daniel, deputy director of ORNL's Sustainable Transportation Program. "With this capability, we can isolate and evaluate a material or process and quantify any advantage that each would provide."

Through the nation's largest open access battery manufacturing R&D facility, American businesses could gain a competitive advantage in the global market.

"R&D facilities such as these are critical in the development of advanced battery technology that is more affordable and more durable than today's batteries," said Patrick Davis, program manager of DOE's Vehicle Technologies Program.

The facility features two chambers totaling 1,400 square feet of space along with state-of-the-art battery manufacturing equipment. One chamber allows researchers to maintain relative humidity levels of between 0.5 and 15 percent. This room houses equipment that allows for mixing of various slurries, stabilization, coating and drying.

The second chamber provides a dew point of minus-40 degrees Celsius, which translates to a relative humidity of 05 percent. This is necessary to prevent moisture from entering and degrading battery cells. In this chamber, electrodes, cathodes and anodes are assembled automatically into pouches that are filled with a precise amount of electrolyte. The pouches are then trimmed and sealed through a heating and vacuum process.

Researchers can make batteries with up to 7 ampere-hours capacity, a size that provides good demonstration capability but requires less material, reducing the burden on smaller companies that lack large-scale production capacity.

Working with others, Daniel looks forward to many successes.

"ORNL's combination of equipment and expertise allows collaborators to develop and optimize processes, manufacturing schemes, perform diagnostics and maximize yield," Daniel said. "Working with industry, we're advancing the field and moving closer to creating a battery that will allow automobiles to travel longer distances on a single charge."

ORNL has a dozen contracts with eight battery-related companies in their quest to compete in a global marketplace.

Feng Shui and Creativity - Dream House and Home for The Future

Feng Shui For Creativity

The ancient practice of feng shui originated in China, but affects every living being, much like gravity. As a metaphysical art form, feng shui is a vast body of theories and techniques for improving the quality of life. Health, finances and relationships are all influenced by where you live and work and feng shui reveals that on a level which most people are not aware of.

One area of life and livelihood that is extremely important to many people is their creative potential. Writers, actors, artists, musicians, and many creative people in the entertainment industry, food or fashion industries can all benefit from feng shui remedies designed to heighten creative potential or enhance the inherent creative areas that already exist in their house.

The key is how to identify where those creative areas are and then utilize those areas of your floor plan.

I once had a client whose home revealed that the most creative area landed in her master bathroom. This is usually considered a waste of good space, which is why feng shui can be so powerful in the design phase. If someone knew in advance where the best areas of their home would be located, they could build the house to make sure the bedrooms, home office and main entrance landed in the good areas and not wasted on rooms that one hardly uses. With the client whose major creative area landed in her bathroom, I began to explain how that was not so desirable, but she assured me that she actually got most of her ideas for screenplays while soaking in her tub! Feng Shui For Creativity

Every house has a couple of locations that can be enhanced to stimulate creativity. Typical remedies often employ design and d?cor features, with water being one of the most powerful natural elements to add to the right location. This is why I love water fountains and aquariums. As well, there are some house types that naturally attract creative people. For example, houses built between 1924-1943 are called ?Period 4? houses and that Era of construction contains many house types that are great for creative people. One only needs to look at certain sections of Los Angeles that are filled with homes from this Era (West Hollywood, Beverly Hills) to see that people often match their homes. As well, some of the major studios have older structures on the lot from this Era called Period 4. At Fox Studios there are some buildings that face southwest and built between 1984-2003 that end up having this ?4? energy in the very center, which also means the building can support creative ventures. The ?4 star? is not to be understood literally as the number 4 or part of an address. It is just code for the energies that can be calculated in the same way that we can refer to water as H2O.
