Pioneer announces XDJ-R1 all-in-one digital DJ deck with MIDI, iOS control features (video)

Pioneer announces XDJ-R1 all-in-one CD player with MIDI and iOS wireless control (video)

Sure, DJ controllers might be the emerging force in spinning, but CDJs are still largely the club standard. Pioneer has always had thumbs in both of these pies, of course, but the new XDJ-R1 sees the brand uniting them for the first time. The all-in-one unit offers two CD players, USB media playback and MIDI controller functionality. Additionally, you can keep things moving wirelessly via an iOS device thanks to a new dedicated "remotebox" app. Wireless direct means that you won't need to worry too much about flaky connections while you wander into the crowd with your iPhone. You'll still be able to control almost everything directly in the app. Back on the physical (and built-in) two-channel mixer you can spice things up with the usual loop, sync, hot cue and sampling features, plus a choice of color effects. The inclusion of XLR outputs and booth out shows that Pioneer wants to see this in the DJ box, and at $1,099, it should appeal to anyone who'd been eyeing up the component parts. It's available in June, but in the meantime there's a video tour cued up past the break.

Why Pentagon has doubts about no-fly zone over Syria (+video)

Reports suggest the Pentagon is preparing no-fly zone plans for Syria, but experts and Pentagon officials say such a strategy might not accomplish much.

By Anna Mulrine,?Staff writer / May 29, 2013

This image taken from video obtained from Ugarit News shows a Syrian fighter jet in a hangar after rebels captured Jarrah airfield in Aleppo province in February. The Syrian Air Force is responsible for only a small fraction of the attacks against rebel forces, Pentagon officials say.

Reports this week that the Pentagon is putting together plans for a no-fly zone over Syria came as little surprise to most defense analysts ? after all, senior US military officials are constantly planning for war possibilities.

Holly Williams reports on their difficulties.

What is surprising, however, are concerns both within the halls of the Pentagon and among analysts as to whether a no-fly zone would actually be very helpful in protecting civilians and antigovernment fighters on the ground.

What?s more, a US military operation to create a no-fly zone could easily go awry, they add.?

Pentagon spokesman George Little dismissed the notion of any new strategizing on the Syrian front. ?There is no new military planning effort underway with regard to Syria,? he said in a statement, adding that the Joint Staff is forging ahead with ?prudent planning for a range of possible military options.?

But just how prudent would a no-fly zone be? ?For all the talk of no-fly zones, Syrian aircraft are not that relevant,? says a senior US military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.?

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey has noted that only 10 percent of casualties sustained by Syrian opposition forces are being imposed by air power. The other 90 percent come from direct fire or artillery.?

What?s more, he added in remarks at a Monitor breakfast last month, ?whether the military effect would produce the kind of outcome I think that not only members of Congress but all of us would desire ? which is an end to the violence, some kind of political reconciliation among the parties, and a stable Syria ? that?s the reason I?ve been cautious, is the right word, about the application of the instrument of power, because it?s not clear to me that it would produce that outcome.??

The outcome of such an operation has the potential to ignite a larger regional war, says Aram Nerguizian, senior fellow at the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

?The risk is that things are bad enough regionally that if you have a US pilot who ends up killed or captured by [Syrian President Bashir] Assad?s forces, it offers, at best, a diplomatic opportunity for communication, but at worst, the sort of incident that leads to a larger war,? Mr. Nerguizian says.

The shoot-down of a US fighter jet is far from a remote possibility. Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona, on the heels of his highly-publicized visit with Syrian rebel forces this week, acknowledged that US fighter jet pilots would have to ?fly into the teeth of Syria?s air defenses? in the event of a no-fly zone.

What?s more, though a no-fly zone may seem like a highly compartmentalized military operation, its impacts could ripple in a region where a number of world powers have a stake.

?A no-fly zone cannot be disconnected from the fact that this war for Syria is a regional war,? Nerguizian says, citing Sunni-Shia fault lines within Syria, as well as US-Iranian competition.

There is, too, a ?third layer that many allies thought was nonexistent for years: a US-Russia dynamic. All of these things are overlapping in a way that makes this a powder keg,? he adds. ?We don?t have visibility on how Hezbollah could retaliate, how Iran would respond, and how the Russians would handle it.??

That doesn?t mean that a no-fly zone ?is a nonoption, but it does mean that the costs are, frankly, very difficult to predict.?

S.Africa's Tiger Brands H1 profit flat

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Africa's biggest consumer foods group, Tiger Brands, barely increased first-half profit as debt-laden consumers cut back on spending, while higher input costs and tougher competition hit margins.

South Africa-based Tiger Brands, which makes bread, breakfast cereal and energy drinks, said headline earnings per share totalled 818.3 cents in the six months to end-March, up 4 percent from 786.5 cents a year earlier.

Headline EPS, South Africa's most widely used profit gauge, strips out some one-off items.

Tiger Brands products are facing tough competition as international companies such Procter & Gamble bulk up their presence across Africa and grocers launch more cut-price private label products.

The company, which makes about 16 percent its sales outside its home market, said revenue rose 20 percent to 14 billion rand, helped in part by favourable currency swings and contribution from an acquisition.

Tiger Brands is among the worst performing stocks on the JSE this year, reflecting growing concerns about personal debt levels and rising unemployment in Africa's biggest economy.

Its shares are down about 10 percent this year, underperforming a 5 percent rise in Johannesburg's All-share index.

Gonzalez, Dodgers rally for 8-7 win over Angels

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Comeback wins haven't come easily to the Dodgers, who had dropped four one-run games in a row.

They staged their biggest rally of the season Monday night, overcoming a five-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-7 in the Freeway Series opener.

"It can definitely be a momentum builder, but you can't have momentum unless you come out tomorrow and play hard," said Adrian Gonzalez, who had a season-high four hits and tied his career high with four runs scored.

Jerry Hairston Jr.'s RBI single scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to help the Dodgers snap the Angels' season-high eight-game winning streak in the first of two games at Dodger Stadium before the series shifts to Anaheim for two more.

"It seemed like all over the place guys were getting big hits," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.

Scott Van Slyke went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Juan Uribe finished 3 for 3 after entering as a pinch hitter in the fifth.

Gonzalez continued his tear with his third multihit game in a row. He is 9 for 11 with six runs, three doubles and seven RBIs since Saturday.

The Dodgers probably wish Gonzalez's hitting could rub off on slugger Matt Kemp, who continued struggling a day after he was left out of the starting lineup in a 5-3 loss to St. Louis. He was booed heavily as he went hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts.

"When things aren't going your way you try harder," Gonzalez said. "He's trying too hard for the team and the fans."

Hairston was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day. He was 0 for 2 with a strikeout before he singled off Robert Coello (1-1) with two outs. After Kemp struck out for the third time, Gonzalez singled and Van Slyke struck out before pinch-hitter Andre Ethier walked to set up Hairston.

Ronald Belisario (3-4) faced one batter in the seventh and got an inning-ending, double-play grounder from Hank Conger to earn the victory.

Brandon League pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 13 chances.

Trailing 8-7, the Angels had the potential tying run at first base with two outs in the eighth. Mike Trout flied out to right field and Erick Aybar raced back to first. Gonzalez caught Ethier's throw wide of the bag and lunged to tag Aybar as he ran past, doubling him off first.

Aybar slammed his helmet into the dirt after first base umpire Paul Emmel signaled out, believing Gonzalez had missed the tag. Aybar and first base coach Alfredo Griffin began arguing with Emmel as Angels manager Mike Scioscia rushed out to join them.

Scioscia pushed Aybar out of the way and engaged in an animated debate with Emmel. Scioscia retreated to the dugout, and the replay was inconclusive.

"From our angle ? and we had a pretty good angle on it ? it looked like there was a lot of daylight," Scioscia said. "Erick got a great jump, but the timing wasn't right where he could peek to see where the ball was hit. He made too big of a turn, but he got back to first base. Unfortunately, he didn't get the call."

The Angels tied the game 7-all in the seventh on Howie Kendrick's RBI single.

Van Slyke's tying RBI double capped a four-run fifth for the Dodgers before A.J. Ellis' sacrifice fly put them ahead 7-6 in the sixth.

The Angels took a 6-1 lead with three runs in the fourth on Aybar's RBI double, Trout's RBI triple into the left-field corner and Albert Pujols' sacrifice fly to deep center.

"We're swinging the bats well, but if I had to point out one thing about the streak, it had to be the starting pitching," Trout said. "I think the ERA was like under 2.00. But they came out swinging the bats. They kept battling and putting great at-bats together."

The anticipated pitching duel between Angels lefty C.J. Wilson and Zack Greinke against his old team for the first time fizzled, with neither figuring in the decision.

Wilson gave up six runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings, struck out four and walked none.

"I just made bad pitches," he said. "I was trying to make a good pitch and I made a hitter's pitch instead of a pitcher's pitch. It's unfortunate because the offense obviously supported the pitching. I just let them down."

Greinke allowed six runs ? four earned ? and 10 hits in four-plus innings. He struck out two and walked one. Considered the top arm on the free-agent market last winter, the right-hander signed a $147 million, six-year deal to switch Los Angeles teams.

"I made some mistakes, obviously, but overall I did about as well as I could," he said. "It felt like I was going to get them out and they were hitting the ball hard."

NOTES: The Dodgers improved to 5-6 in one-run games this season. ... Kendrick notched his 400th career RBI with a run-scoring double in the third. ... The clubs combined for 11 doubles (six by the Dodgers), a Dodger Stadium record. ... The Angels fell to 20-31 on Memorial Day. ... The Angels are 13-6 in the last 19 games against the Dodgers and 9-4 in the last 13 in Los Angeles. ... The Dodgers optioned SS Dee Gordon to Triple-A Albuquerque. He batted .175 with five steals, a homer and eight RBIs in 19 games with the Dodgers.

Ancient plants reawaken: Plants exposed by retreating glaciers regrowing after centuries entombed under ice

May 28, 2013 ? When University of Alberta researcher Catherine La Farge threads her way through the recently exposed terrain left behind by retreating glaciers, she looks at the ancient plant remains a lot closer than most. Now, her careful scrutiny has revealed a startling reawakening of long-dormant plants known as bryophytes.

La Farge, a researcher in the Faculty of Science, and director and curator of the Cryptogamic Herbarium at the University of Alberta, has overturned a long-held assumption that all of the plant remains exposed by retreating polar glaciers are dead. Previously, any new growth of plants close to the glacier margin was considered the result of rapid colonization by modern plants surrounding the glacier.

Using radiocarbon dating, La Farge and her co-authors confirmed that the plants, which ranged from 400 to 600 years old, were entombed during the Little Ice Age that happened between 1550 and 1850. In the field, La Farge noticed that the subglacial populations were not only intact, but also in pristine condition -- with some suggesting regrowth.

In the lab, La Farge and her master's student Krista Williams selected 24 subglacial samples for culture experiments. Seven of these samples produced 11 cultures that successfully regenerated four species from the original parent material.

La Farge says the regrowth of these Little Ice Age bryophytes (such as mosses and liverworts) expands our understanding of glacier ecosystems as biological reservoirs that are becoming increasingly important with global ice retreat. "We know that bryophytes can remain dormant for many years (for example, in deserts) and then are reactivated, but nobody expected them to rejuvenate after nearly 400 years beneath a glacier.

"These simple, efficient plants, which have been around for more than 400 million years, have evolved a unique biology for optimal resilience," she adds. "Any bryophyte cell can reprogram itself to initiate the development of an entire new plant. This is equivalent to stem cells in faunal systems."

La Farge says the finding amplifies the critical role of bryophytes in polar environments and has implications for all permafrost regions of the globe.

"Bryophytes are extremophiles that can thrive where other plants don't, hence they play a vital role in the establishment, colonization and maintenance of polar ecosystems. This discovery emphasizes the importance of research that helps us understand the natural world, given how little we still know about polar ecosystems -- with applied spinoffs for understanding reclamation that we may never have anticipated."

The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Parents need to insure against the loss of one income... | Stuff.co.nz

Being left in sole charge of two young girls for three-and-a-half weeks by my wife has left me considering the price I should put on her head.

I could have phrased that better. Let me try again.

Being left alone in sole charge of two young girls for three-and-a-half weeks by my wife, who has gone overseas for work, has left me with a new appreciation of how much she does for me and the girls, and how lost we would be without her.

And being a man who is also practical, her temporary absence prompted me to wonder afresh about how I would cope long term.

The answer is pretty simple. Without having access to rather a lot of money, life as we know it would come to an end.

You see, a wife, or a husband (or whatever legal equivalent you may be) makes life tick when you have kids, and it's hard to hold it all together on your own.

Kids bring many joys, but also great responsibility. You want to raise them right. You want to teach them well. You want them to feel the freedom and joy of life. You want to be able to buy them the things they need to grow and develop. You want them to spend time with you.

All this takes money.

Two working parents (the norm in this country of ludicrously high house prices) make this more or less possible.

Take one away permanently, and there is a sudden urgent need for money.

First of all: one salary is gone.

That's a blow, a big blow if there is still a mortgage to pay, or rent to find every week.

Having life insurance on each parent sufficient to pay off the mortgage, or meet the rent payments for a decent period of years, is most people's bare minimum level of life insurance cover. After all, the last thing you'd want to do to your grief-stricken kids is have to move them to a new, cheaper house, or more down-market rental, especially if that brings a shift of school.

But even with a debt-free house, adjusting to life on one income, and indeed being able to perform at work to the same level, may prove hard.

It may also be costly.

Before and after school care is the norm for many kids now. Two professional parents juggling their hours can manage to keep the need for it low.

Being a solo working dad or mum means footing the bill for more of that childcare on a much reduced income.

Any insurance adviser will tell you I have only begun to scratch the surface here: Cleaners cost money, so does lawnmowing. There are little matters like the kids' education fund, Kiwisaver contributions. What about the annual holiday, your medical insurance, school contributions, etc.

The list is long.

They'll soon be suggesting you insure the Mrs/Mr (delete where applicable) for a sum large enough to replace his or her income for a period of years.

Some may suggest replacing the income for long enough the see the kids through school, or even uni.

There's merit in that approach for those who can afford it.

Those who cannot need to work out what level of cover they can afford.

Each husband and wife (or whatever you both may be) must decide on the price to put on each others' heads, just in case the worst happens.

?If you love it, protect it

?Work out what you would need to get by

?Life insurance is just the start

How to teach turn taking - Articles - UsingEnglish.com

By: Alex Case |Audience: Teachers|Category: Teaching English

Smooth, polite and appropriate turn taking is achieved with:

- Specific phrases

- Gestures and other body language

- Noises, e.g. uming and ahing while thinking so as to not lose the turn

- Speaking a certain way, e.g. using intonation to show that you have or haven?t finished and very quickly saying (just) the beginning of your sentence to interrupt

The specific turn taking phrases can be divided into ones for:

- Taking the turn (interrupting, accepting the turn when offered it, speaking first, etc)

- Keeping your turn (stopping other people interrupting, signalling that you are going to continue, taking the turn back and continuing what you were going to say, etc)

- Getting other people speaking (getting the other person to speak first, asking for more details, keeping other people speaking with conversational reactions (a part of ?active listening?), changing your mind about interrupting, offering other people the chance to speak, turning down the chance to speak, ending your interruption, and signalling the end of your turn).

There is a big list of possible phrases of all of those types at the bottom of this article. A lot of those phrases tie in quite well with opinions language, e.g. using asking for opinions language to get the other person speaking, agreeing language to keep them speaking, and disagreeing language to interrupt. You could also include phrases for a person trying to control the turn taking in a group discussion, like a chair of a meeting.

There are cultural differences in turn taking, but in general a good conversation would have lots of switching over of who speaks, approximately the same amount of speaking by each person, little talking over each other, little or no silence, and smooth moves between different topics ? and these are certainly things that students should be able to do in speaking exam tasks that test turn taking such as FCE and CAE speaking part three.

Presenting turn taking

One good way of presenting turn taking is showing students there is a potential problem. This can be done with recordings of bad turn taking, e.g. one person dominating the conversation, people talking over each other, or impolite interrupting. They can then brainstorm suitable tactics and phrases to not make the same mistakes and/ or listen to good examples for things they can use.

A similar way of approaching the topic is to ask them to do a communicative activity and then ask them to evaluate how well they took turns during the activity, but this is difficult to do properly. If you give them the evaluation questions beforehand, the communication probably won?t be natural. However, if you give the evaluation questions after, they probably won?t remember what they did. Probably the best solution is to get students to do it in threes, with one person not taking part but just monitoring for what the people speaking do and the language they use. They can then try again with a different person monitoring (obviously this time knowing what they are being monitored for), before brainstorming other ways to do the same thing. This also works well when you have just finished presenting another discussion skill such as giving opinions, as they will probably assume that they are being monitored for just that previous language focus.

Another possibility is to get students deliberately doing something extreme like trying to stop their partner speaking at all. This works best if the student who they are working with doesn?t know what they are doing. That person can then perhaps guess what their partner had been asked to do (e.g. what was written on that person?s roleplay card). They can then brainstorm ways of making sure those things don?t happen in real communication such as useful phrases.

A more serious way of doing something similar is to get students discussing which of some tips on turn taking are good and bad ideas, then brainstorming suitable ways of doing the things which are good ideas. For example, they could cross off the tip ?Wait for silence before speaking? and brainstorm phrases like ?Can I interrupt?? for the tip ?Use phrases to show that you want to speak?.

The activity which I use most often at the presentation stage is getting students to divide the phrases that the teacher is saying into two categories, e.g. by racing to hold up ?interrupting? and ?keeping the turn? cards depending on what they hear. They can then label the sentences on the worksheet with the same categories and test each other in pairs. The same thing can be done with the pairs of categories ?interrupting?/ ?encouraging the person to continue? and ?person speaking?/ ?person listening?.

Many of the ideas above can be used in the practice section of the class instead or as well as in the presentation stage, and many of the practice ideas below can be used for presentation in a TTT or TBL approach.

Practice of turn taking

As mentioned above, Cambridge First Certificate and Cambridge Advanced have a speaking task that is specifically designed to test turn taking skills, and this is easily adaptable and useful for non-exam classes. In fact, most of the presentation and practice activities in this article work better with those tasks than with other ways of stimulating conversation such as discussion questions.

There are also activities which are a bit more difficult to set up but provide even more intensive practice. This can be done by designing activities in which one person is bound to be interrupted when their partner notices something about what they say. The most straightforward way is for the students to have texts with differences. The person listening stops their partner speaking whenever they say something that is different from their text so that they can both underline the differences, then they continue in the same way until the end of the text (perhaps switching roles during the activity). These can be two version of the same text where the teacher has changed a few things, or two versions of the same story (e.g. the same news story from different newspapers or two people?s accounts of witnessing a crime). The same thing can also be done with a wider range of texts by asking them to look for similarities rather than differences.

A more complex game is asking them to interrupt whenever they think they have noticed something false in their partner?s story, with one point for each timely interruption. Their partner gets points if they interrupt in the wrong place and if more than ten seconds after a falsehood goes by without being interrupted.

Tasks where students work together can also be tweaked to include more interrupting. For example, if you ask them to do a matching task together quicker than the other groups, they should naturally interrupt their partner whenever they have enough information about one thing.

Many of the other good practice games involve students placing down cards when they interrupt, stop interruption, etc. The easiest way of doing that is to deal out a pack of cards with the different turn taking skills written on them, e.g. ?make other people speak? and ?politely interrupt?. These are dealt out, and students place them down as they think they have successfully done that thing during the discussion (with their partners being able to dispute that if they like). The person with fewest cards left in their hand at the end of the game wins. To get more complexity and variety of language, students can be told to use (at least slightly) different phrases each time they lay down a card. Alternatively, they can be given cards with different phrases or words that they should use during the discussion to be able to place them down, with their partner being able to challenge them for incorrect or impolite use of ?stop?, ?finish?, etc.

You can also do similar things to the game above with a third person monitoring. For example, that third person can judge whether each card has been used correctly and so can stay discarded, just giving them back to the people who discarded them if they don?t think so. The person monitoring can also be the one given the cards, placing them in front of the people who says that thing, meaning that in this case the person with most cards at the end of the game wins. This can be done with the people speaking being allowed to see the cards that the person monitoring has, or with the cards being kept secretly in that person?s hand.

Monitoring can also be done in a more straightforward way, e.g. one person writing down all the phrases and tactics that people use or trying to judge the percentage of speaking time between the two people, similar to what is suggested for the presentation stage above.

One person (the teacher, one student, or one student per group) can also signal when students should interrupt, invite their partner to speak etc, with that person trying to do so as quickly and naturally as possible after they are nominated. This can be done by holding up cards with those tactics written on them or (more amusingly) with hand gestures or sounds being the prompts. The latter idea can also lead onto specific examination of gestures such as a chopping motion for trying to interrupt.

The big list of turn taking language

1. Taking the turn

Interrupting

(I?m afraid) I can?t let you go on without (saying)?

Before I forget,?

Before you continue, (can I just say)?

Before you go on,?

Before you move on,?

Can I/ Could I (just) say something (here)?

Can I/ Could I come in (here/ there)?

Can I/ Could I interrupt you (for a minute/ moment/ second)?

Can I/ Could I just?

Can I/ Could I stop you there?

Excuse me/ Sorry for interrupting, but?

Excuse the interruption, but?

I don?t like to interrupt, but?

I don?t mean to interrupt, but?

I hate to interrupt (you) (in full flow), but?

I have something to say (on this point).

I know it?s rude to interrupt, but?

I wouldn?t usually interrupt, but?

I?d like to make a point here (if I can/ could/ may/ might).

I?ll interrupt you there.

I?ll let you finish in a minute, but?

I?ll stop you there.

I?m afraid I have to stop you there.

If I can/ could/ may/ might (just) interrupt you (for just a minute/ moment/ second), I?d like to?

If I may/ might?

If it?s okay to interrupt,?

If you don?t mind me interrupting,?

If you think that sounds boring/ exciting/ frightening,?

If you will allow me (to say something/ to speak for a second),?

Is this a good time to??

Just wait until you hear?

May I interrupt?

May I(?)?

Me too! In fact,?

Perhaps I could?

Sorry for butting in, but?

Sorry for not letting you finish, but?

Sorry to butt in, but?

Sorry to interrupt, but?

Sorry to stop you in full flow, but?

Sorry, can I just??

Sorry,?

That reminds me of?

That?s nothing!...

The same (kind of) thing happened to me the other day.

This may/ might be a good point to?

This may/ might be the right time to say/ ask?

Would this be a good time to??

Accepting the turn when offered it

Thanks. (I won?t take long).

What I wanted to say was?

What was I going to say? Oh yes,?

Speaking first

Although you probably know more about this than me,?

Can I go ahead?

Can I speak first?

I can see you want to say something about this, but?

Before you get started,?

I?d like to start the discussion by?

May I?

Shall I get us started?

Shall I start the discussion?

2. Keeping your turn

Stopping other people interrupting/ Refusing interruption

(I have) just one more point (to make).

(I?m/ I?ve) nearly finished.

(Just) one more thing (before you interrupt).

Before you have your say,?

Before you interrupt,?

Before you reply,?

Can I/ Could I just finish (my sentence/ this point/ what I was saying)?

I can see that you want to interrupt, but?

I can see that you want to say something (about this), but?

I haven?t (quite) finished (my point) (yet).

I haven?t (quite) finished what I was saying.

I haven?t got to my main point (yet), which is?

I just want to make one more point/ say one more thing before you have your say.

I know what you?re going to say.

I know you?re dying to jump in, but?

I won?t take long.

If I can/ could just finish (what I was saying/ what I wanted to say/ this one point),?

If you?d allow me to finish?

Please (just) let me finish.

Please allow me to finish.

That is the next point I want to get to, once I?ve finished?

You probably want to say?, but?

Signalling that you are going to continue

And that was just the beginning of the story.

And that?s not all.

And then it got even worse.

And what?s more,?

But you haven?t heard the half of it.

Furthermore,?

In addition,?

Not only that, but?

You might think that is all there is to say on the matter, but?

Taking the turn back/ Continuing what you were going to say/ Getting back on track

(Mmm. Good point.) Anyhow/ Anyway/ Anyhoo,?

As I was saying (before I was interrupted),?

Can I/ Could I get back to you later on that?

Can we get back to the point on the agenda?

Carrying on from where I/ we left off,?

Getting back on track,?

Getting back to the point at hand,?

I?ll come/ I?ll be coming on to that (point/ question) later.

If I can return to the original topic,?

Perhaps we can talk about that later (but?)

Shall I carry on?

To get back on topic,?

To get back to the point at hand/ to what I was saying,?

We seem to be getting off the point.

What was I saying?/ Where was I?/ Where were we? Oh yes,?

3. Getting other people speaking

Getting the other person to speak first

(No, please). After you.

Age before beauty

I?d like to hear your opinion before I comment.

I?m not sure what I want to say yet, so?

I'll let you go first.

Ladies first.

Please go ahead.

You know more about this than me, so?

You must have an opinion on this, so?

Offering other people the chance to speak

(Now) I?d be (very) interested to hear your views (on?)/ what you think (about?)

?, but I?d be interested in hearing your take on it.

?, but I?m sure you have another point of view.

?, right?

Am I right?

Any (initial) thoughts on??

But that?s enough from me.

Can you give me your thoughts on??

Do you agree?

Do you have an opinion on??

Do you have any (particular) thoughts/ views on??

Do you have any opinions on/ about??

Do you think??

Do you/ Did you want to add anything?

Does anyone want to say anything before we move on?

Don't you think (so)?

And you?

How about you?

(Now) I'd like to hear what you think (about?)/ your views (on?).

From your point of view,??

How do you feel about??

I imagine you will have strong opinions on?

I know this is not your specialist subject, but?

I know you haven?t had much time to think about this, but?

Or am I just talking nonsense?

Or not?

Please tell me your opinion on?

What are your (first) thoughts on??

What are your feelings about??

What are your views on??

What do you reckon?

What do you think (about?)?

What reaction do you have to??

What?s your experience (of this)?

What?s your opinion (on this)?

What?s your position on??

What?s your take on??

What?s your view on??

Would you agree (that?)?

You haven?t said anything yet.

You must have a view on this too.

Asking for more details

And then?

Dish!

How did you get out of that?

What happened?

What are you going to do about it?

So?

Keeping other people speaking with interested noises etc

(I?m) sorry to hear that.

Amazing!

Congratulations!/ Well done!

Shudder!

Glad to hear it!

Ha!

How wonderful/ exciting/ depressing/ embarrassing/ ironic!

I don?t believe it!

I know./ I know (just) what you mean.

Never mind!

Nice!

Lucky you!

No!?/ No way!

Oh my goodness!

Really?

That sounds great/ awful/ horrible.

That was close!

That?s a pity!/ That?s a shame!

That?s amazing!

Well I never!/ Well I never did!

What a pity!/ What a shame!

Whoops!

Wow!

You lucky thing!/ You poor thing!

You?re joking!?

Signalling the end of your turn

And so on.

Etcetera etcetera.

I could go on.

I think I?ve made my point.

Sorry for waffling on.

That?s all I wanted to say.

Which just about covers it.

(I think) you get the idea.

Turning down the chance to speak

I can?t add anything to that.

I don?t have any view on this at all.

I think you?ve covered everything.

I?m still just digesting what you said.

I?m still thinking about what I want to say.

Changing your mind about interrupting

I was going to interrupt, but?

I?ll let you finish.

No no, you go on.

No, it?s okay. I?ve forgotten what I was going to say.

Sorry, I didn?t mean to interrupt.

Sorry, I thought you?d finished.

That?s okay, you?ve already answered my question.

Ending your interruption

Sorry, please carry on./ Sorry, please go on.

Sorry, you were going to say?

Sorry, you were saying?

Sorry, you were saying?

Sorry. What were you saying??

MOORE, Okla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama flew to tornado-ravaged Oklahoma Sunday, offering moral and monetary support to people still reeling from lost lives and shattered neighborhoods. He told survivors, "You've got folks behind you" across America.

Standing with Gov. Mary Fallin and other state and federal officials amid the devastation wrought by a monstrous EF5 tornado, Obama said, "A picture's worth a thousand words." He said rebuilding job will be enormous and "we're going to be with you all the way."

"Our hearts go out to you," Obama said, noting the loss of life and some 1,200 homes. He urged the American people to pitch in and help, saying that in instances such as this, the president serves as a "messenger" for all citizens, bringing words of condolence, promises of government assistance and pleas for private contributions.

Twenty-four people, including 10 children, died when the nearly tornado hit with little notice last Monday afternoon.

The White House said before his arrival Sunday that Obama wanted a firsthand look at the destruction and recovery efforts.

Shortly after his arrival on a partly cloudy day, Obama road in his motorcade past grassy fields strewn with scattered debris, witnessing devastation so awesome that it appeared as if garbage had literally rained from the sky. His first stop was the demolished site of the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven students were killed when the tornado turned the one-story building into a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal.

Obama walked along Eagle Drive, with the demolished school on his left and on his right, homes reduced as far as the eye could see to piles of rubble. Vehicles were turned upside down and toys like doll carriages and children's books were strewn with furniture and ripped out wall insulation.

"I know this is tough," he told one school official.

He met the Lewis family, who lost their home behind the school, telling them the important thing is they survived and could replace their things.

"What a mess," he told their son Zack, a third grader at the shattered school. Zack's father, Scott, ran into the school just before the storm hit and ran with his terrified son back to their home's storm shelter.

"You've got some story to tell," Obama told the boy. "This is something you'll remember all your life."

Obama flew from Washington into Tinker Air Force Base and shook hands with personnel whose homes off base were lost or damaged.

Fallin, the first to greet the president as he got off the plane, said she appreciates the visit, but the state also needs quick action from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help the ravaged town of 41,000 people.

The Republican governor said so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Obama offered prayers for residents from the White House in recent days and has promised to support the rebuilding for as long as it takes. "They have suffered mightily this week," Obama said Wednesday. "And while the road ahead will be long, their country will be with them every single step of the way."

White House spokesman Josh Earnest, speaking to reporters accompanying the presidential party on Air Force One, said Obama wanted to make the trip to offer condolences and reiterate his and the nation's commitment to rebuild.

"This is the greatest nation on Earth, and we're going to dedicate this nation's time, attention, resources and expertise to help our people in their time of urgent crisis," the spokesman said.

Earnest touted the federal contributions so far, including Obama's signing of a disaster declaration within hours of the storm to speed aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Earnest said that 450 FEMA personnel were working on the ground in Oklahoma and have delivered 43,000 meals, 150,000 liters of water and thousands of cots, blankets and tarps. He said 4,200 people have applied for disaster assistance, and $3.4 million in payments have been approved.

Fallin said the money is particularly vital for the victims. "A lot of people lose their checkbooks, they lose their credit cards, they lose their driver's license, their birth certificates, their insurance papers, they lose everything, and they have no cash. And some of the banks were even hit, the ATM machines, so people need cash to get immediate needs," she said on CBS.

Earnest also said that forecasters from the National Weather Service had worked ahead of the storm to prepare communities that it threatened. He said they issued a warning 36 minutes before the tornado entered Moore, earlier than the 12-minute average warning. Twenty-four people perished in the tornado, including 10 children.

"These advancements, made by government scientists in the field of weather forecasting at these agencies are dramatic and they're saving lives," Earnest said. He said Sunday wasn't a day for a partisan political debate, adding that "it is evident to any impartial observer here what an important role the federal government can play in providing assistance to our people at their time of urgent need."

Among the tornado victims were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.

Fallin noted that some 100 other schools in Oklahoma have safe rooms for children to seek shelter in tornados.

"Schools that have been lost in the past, many of them have rebuilt rooms of some sort as a safe room in their school, and we're certainly going to encourage that," she said.

"Any death is very unfortunate, but it's truly incredible that we had only 24 deaths at this site, because if you look at all the debris field and how wide it is, I don't know how anybody survived this tornado," she said on CBS.

The White House said that FEMA has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma. "These storm shelters can be the difference between life and death," Earnest said.

OK Gov. Fallin Worries of 'Red Tape'; Dole Slams Modern GOP

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin told CNN's Candy Crowley she's pleased with the federal help her state's received since the tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma, but she's growing disenchanted with the?bureaucracy on State of the Union. "What I need is the ability to get through red tape," Fallin said Sunday morning. "So far, we have had great response," she added. Fallin singled out FEMA Director Craig Fugate and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for appreciation. On CBS's Face the Nation, Fallin said she's going to capitalize on having the President's attention when he visits Oklahoma on Sunday. "I'm going to tell him that we appreciate his visit first of all but also that we need quick action," the governor said. "I've heard so many incredible stories of people helping people. There were so many volunteers out here yesterday that streets were packed." Fallin expressed disbelief over the number of people killed after the EF-5 tornado swept through her state. "It's truly incredible that we had only 24 deaths," she said. "I don't know how anyone survived this tornado."

Sen. Lindsey Graham didn't enjoy the President's shifting of the war on terror and new drone strike policy, he revealed on Fox News Sunday. "We show this lack of resolve, talking about the war being over," Graham said. "What do you think the Iranians are thinking? At the end of the day, this is the most tone-deaf president I ever could imagine, making such a speech at a time when our homeland is trying to be attacked literally every day." Graham said he's "never been more worried" about national security than he is right now. Graham also touched on the military's terrible sexual assault record of late. "I want to salute the women who serve and are putting up with way too much crap," he said, before calling for some heads to roll within the military?over the issue. "This needs to end. When a victim comes forward, they should have an advocate to walk them through the military justice system. And commanders who allow this to continue to flourish, quite frankly, should be fired." He also praised the President's response to the issue so far. "The president spoke well of this problem. It is a disgrace to the United States Military."

Someone else who wasn't impressed with the President's counter terrorism speech? Former Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, of course. He called it "naive" during an appearance on CNN's State of the Union. "It's just stunningly, breathtakingly naive," Gingrich said. He pointed to the London attack from this week, among other things, as examples of the ongoing threat of extremism. "This stuff's going on everywhere, and we will never be in peace in the pre-1941 sense that we are never threatened," he said. "No one wants to talk honestly" about the widespread nature of the threat.

RELATED: What We Can Glean from the Candidates' Closing Arguments in Iowa

Another former Presidential nominee Bob Dole doesn't think his generation could have made it in the modern Republican party. He expressed his doubts during an interview on Fox News Sunday. "I doubt it," he said when asked if he would make it today. "Reagan couldn't have made it. Certainly, Nixon couldn't have made it, cause he had ideas. We might've made it, but I doubt it." That Nixon line is particularly biting. Dole doesn't seem very fond of the new generation of GOP stars in Washington. In fact, he has an idea for fixing the party that might work. "They ought to put a sign on the National Committee doors that says 'Closed for repairs,' until New Year's Day next year," he said. "And spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas." But he didn't limit his criticism to the right. He had words for the President, too. Dole thinks Obama should have spent more time charming House Republicans during his first term. "I'm not a critic of the president, but I think one mistake he has made was not getting together more with Congress early on in his first administration," Dole said. "There's nothing like knowing the person you are talking to on the telephone if you had an opportunity to sit down with that person and visit, not about anything but just visit."

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul argued the President is losing his "moral authority" to lead the U.S. because of the recent wake of scandals plaguing the White House during his appearance on ABC's This Week. "I think the constellation of these three scandals really takes away from the president's moral authority to lead the nation," Paul said. "No one questions his legal authority. But I really think he's losing the moral authority to lead this nation." The President has not been linked directly to the IRS targeting scandal, the Benghazi talking points scandal, or the Justice Department spying scandal so far. But the President did speak about the drone strike program this week, which just so happens to be one of Paul's favorite topics. Paul held a marathon filibuster demanding an expanded legal explanation for the drone strike program a few months ago. It turns out he didn't really enjoy the President's argument. "I was pleased with his words, and I was pleased that he did respond to this," Paul said. "However, there's still a question in my mind of what he thinks due process is. Due process, to most of us, is a court of law. It is a trial by jury, and, right now, their process is him looking at some flash cards and a PowerPoint presentation on 'Terror Tuesdays' in the White House. For a lot of us, that's not really due process." Who saw that one coming?

Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.

New York Rep. Peter King is sick and tired of everyone griping about the?Guantanamo Bay prison. Especially the President, who King charged is "moralizing" the issue on This Week. "I'm offended by the moralizing," King said ?"The fact is, whether you agree or disagree with Guantanamo, many experts believe that it did work. It was something that had to be done at the time. The president had five years to end this if he really wanted to. He could've moved most of those prisoners out of the country." King later charged that the President would have closed Guantanamo by now if he really wanted to. "Everyone wants to close Guantanamo, ultimately," King said. "But again, he has the power to do it. He hasn't done it. He certainly, whether or not Congress was in the way, could have done a lot more than he has done about it if he were serious about it rather than just moralizing." King argued terrorists only use Guantanamo as a symbol because the media and political types "stir" about Guantanamo. "We should be proud, defend what we're doing and stop apologizing for America," he said.

District 14 - A Book Judged By Its Cover - Bleeding Cool Comic ...

district_14_s1_cover Cameron Hatheway writes;

It?s funny; while I never try to judge a book by its cover, after one glance at the front of District 14 and immediately images of Blacksad came to mind. With the use of anthropomorphizing and the creators being European, it was an appropriate assumption to make and I had no problems diving into what appeared to be an old-timey graphic novel with a diverse looking cast of characters. As I discovered throughout the 300 pages of the first season, every character had their secrets, and looks definitely were deceiving for some.

While the narrative shifts from time to time, the main characters we follow are Michael Elizondo, an immigrant elephant with a mysterious past, and Hector McKeagh, a beaver who works for The Telegraph newspaper and happens to be the most determined journalist in all of District 14. There are plenty of juicy stories to hunt down too, for the city is overrun with crime and the majority of politicians are just plain dirty. Michael saves Hector?s life pretty early on, and Hector offers him a job as his personal bodyguard because it?s apparent that Michael knows how to throw a punch. Michael enjoys the life of a journalist, and slowly but surely evolves from saving Hector?s ass to doing some scooping and reporting of his own.

district_14_s1_page59The world Gabus and Reutimann create is a vast one with unlimited possibilities.

Jeff Smith describes it in the foreword as ?It?s like a dream mash-up of Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy, noir and gangster films, as well as 10 cent comic books from the ?40s?oh, and toss in Babar the Elephant for good measure (the authors are French, after all),? and I couldn?t agree more.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? blended with Ross & Edwards? Turf also came to mind, because the creators just go all out intermingling almost every genre together into one hearty and delicious comic book stew. With that being said however, it?s definitely not for all audiences (i.e. the younger ones).

district_14_s1_page16Exploring District 14 through the eyes of Michael was an enjoyable experience, for much like him, we as the audience are just being introduced to this gargantuan city for the first time.

Set in America during what feels like the Golden Age, immigrants of all species are flocking about looking for jobs, food, and gossip.

The Telegraph is the main paper reporting on all the events that take place in the city, and sometimes the stories they report on receive explosive backlash. That doesn?t deter Hector from reporting on them though; for once he has a bite he never lets go.

district_14_s1_page55The supporting cast is interesting in their own rights, spanning from Michael?s main dame Vanita to the superhero known as Tigerman. When everyone is first introduced you make a mental note of if they are animal, alien, or human, but by the end of the graphic novel you stop paying attention because they all fit together seamlessly in execution.

This being the first season, there?s plenty of story and action and twists and turns, with some things being set-up to explore in future seasons. Yes, we discover where Michael came from and why he must drink a certain type of tea, and yes we learn why Hector hates all aliens, but there?s still several more unanswered questions beckoning to be asked and answered. Like a good cliffhanger at the end of a season finale, you let out a groan after reading the final page, desperately wanting the second season to be released pronto. Waiting?s a bitch, and with these European comics, it?s all the translating that throws a wrench into the works.

district_14_s1_page11In the meantime, go out and buy the first season of District 14 today. It?s one of the most unique comics you?ll read all year, and afterwards you?ll want to assemble your own tadpole gangster squad.

How to Make Your Own Self-Destructing Laptop That Blows Up

When a laptop or a phone blows up it's usually because of some dangerous exploding battery. But what if you want to make a laptop self destruct and blow up on its own? You'll have to make something that Q from James Bond would invent, basically. The genius Caleb Kraft did just that.

IRB Pacific Nations Cup 2013 At a Glance

The 2013 Pacific Nations Cup rugby union tournament will be held

between five national sides in the Pacific Region: Canada, Fiji, Japan, Tonga, and USA.

Samoa were the reigning champion after they defeated Fiji in the 2012 competition but will be taking the year off to compete in a tournament with South Africa, Scotland and Italy in the South African Quadrangular Tournament.

The tournament will run from 25 May to 23 June, 2013. Five of the matches are held in Japan, three in Canada, one in the U.S., and one in Fiji.

As with previous years, the tournament will be round-robin where each team plays all of the other teams once. There are four points for a win, two for a draw and none for a defeat. There were also bonus points offered with one bonus point for scoring four or more tries in a match and one bonus point for losing by 7 points or less.

Japan and Tonga have made minor alterations to their teams for Round Two of the IRB Pacific Nations Cup in Tokyo on Sunday.

Japan?s Eddie Jones made just three changes to the side beaten 25-19 by Fiji ahead of Sunday?s clash with Tonga at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground.

Hiroshi Yamashita starts at tighthead prop in place on Kensuke Hatakeyama, Hendrik Tui comes in for the injured Michael Leitch at number eight and Ryan Nicholas comes in for Tomohiro Senba at outside centre as the Brave Blossoms look to avenge their loss to the Ikale Tahi at last year?s Rugby World Cup.

Tonga coach Toutai Kefu, meanwhile, made four changes to the side beaten 20-18 by Samoa.

Tevita Mailau is promoted off the bench and will start at hooker, while Viliami Maafu comes in at number eight.

In the backs, Sefa Vaka starts at centre in place of Mafileo Kefu, while Siale Piutau in named on the wing.

There is one new face on the replacements bench with Edmond Paea getting a call up.

Kurt Morath keeps his place at number ten. On Tuesday, the fly half ? who now plies his trade in Japan for Kefu?s Kubota Spears ? kicked six penalties to take over from Fiji?s Taniela Rawaqa as the highest points scorer in the history of the competition with 113.

Intel Says Haswell Will Extend Laptop Battery Life by 50 Percent

Intel has just made one very, very big claim: it reckons that its new Haswell chip will boost the battery life of laptops by a staggering 50 percent.

Intel's Architecture Group VP Rani Borkar is on the record as saying that laptops powered by Haswell will squeeze 50 percent more runtime out of a battery, and go up to 20 times longer in standby or idle mode. All that, apparently, with no loss in performance. Those numbers are a massive leap, and are, apparently, down to lower power requirements and a new power management chip that'll help reduce the energy draw.

Of course, we'll have to wait and see whether those claims convert to real-world performance increases?because we all know that power consumption claims can sometimes be optimistic.
