ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have created more than 100 three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures using DNA building blocks that function like Lego? bricks -- a major advance from the two-dimensional (2D) structures the same team built a few months ago.
In effect, the advance means researchers just went from being able to build a flat wall of Legos?, to building a house. The new method, featured as a cover research article in the 30 November issue of Science, is the next step toward using DNA nanotechnologies for more sophisticated applications than ever possible before, such as "smart" medical devices that target drugs selectively to disease sites, programmable imaging probes, templates for precisely arranging inorganic materials in the manufacturing of next generation computer circuits, and more.
The nanofabrication technique, called "DNA-brick self-assembly," uses short, synthetic strands of DNA that work like interlocking Lego? bricks. It capitalizes on the ability to program DNA to form into predesigned shapes thanks to the underlying "recipe" of DNA base pairs: A (adenosine) only binds to T (thymine) and C (cytosine) only binds to G (guanine).
Earlier this year, the Wyss team reported in Nature how they could create a collection of 2D shapes by stacking one DNA brick (42 bases in length) upon another.
But there's a "twist" in the new method required to build in 3D.
The trick is to start with an even smaller DNA brick (32 bases in length), which changes the orientation of every matched-up pair of bricks to a 90 degree angle -- giving every two Legos? a 3D shape. In this way, the team can use these bricks to build "out" in addition to "up," and eventually form 3D structures, such as a 25-nanometer solid cube containing hundreds of bricks. The cube becomes a "master" DNA "molecular canvas"; in this case, the canvas was composed of 1000 so-called "voxels," which correspond to eight base-pairs and measure about 2.5 nanometers in size -- meaning this is architecture at its tiniest.
The master canvas is where the modularity comes in: by simply selecting subsets of specific DNA bricks from the large cubic structure, the team built 102 3D structures with sophisticated surface features, as well as intricate interior cavities and tunnels. "This is a simple, versatile and robust method," says Peng Yin, Ph.D., Wyss core faculty member and senior author on the study.
Another method used to build 3D structures, called DNA origami, is tougher to use to build complex shapes, Yin said, because it relies on a long "scaffold" strand of DNA that folds to interact with hundreds of shorter "staple" strands -- and each new shape requires a new scaffold routing strategy and hence new staples. In contrast, the DNA brick method does not use any scaffold strand and therefore has a modular architecture; each brick can be added or removed independently.
"We are moving at lightning speed in our ability to devise ever more powerful ways to use biocompatible DNA molecules as structural building blocks for nanotechnology, which could have great value for medicine as well as non-medical applications," says Wyss Institute Founding Director Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D.
The research team led by Yin, who is also an assistant professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School (HMS), included Wyss Postdoctoral Fellow Yonggang Ke, Ph.D., and Wyss Graduate Student Luvena Ong. Another contributor was Wyss Core Faculty member William Shih, Ph.D., who also holds appointments at HMS and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The research was supported by the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

These government-backed loans are booming in a time of tight credit and mandatory down payments. Loan volume is up 300 percent over the last five years.
VA loans tend to feature lower rates and more forgiving financial requirements than traditional mortgages. Right now, VA lenders are generally looking for a credit score of at least 620.
In comparison, the average FICO score for an FHA denial in May was 669. This past August, borrowers with credit scores of 740 and above accounted for 53 percent of all loans, according to the National Association of Realtors.
They?ve also thrown some cold water on the ?skin in the game? arguments surrounding Dodd-Frank and the qualified residential mortgage debate.
Ninety percent of VA purchase loans come with no money down, yet they?ve exhibited the lowest foreclosure rate for the last 17 quarters for any loan program, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Looming weeks away is America?s ?fiscal cliff.? President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner are both optimistic that a deal on spending cuts and taxes can be reached. But Erskine Bowles, co-chair of the former bipartisan deficit commission, says there?s only a one-third chance Washington will reach an agreement in time to avoid the fiscal precipice.
What Washington seems to have forgotten is that America was established by men who disagreed sorely, but created a government founded on the philosophy that varying views could be coalesced for the common good. As challenging as these modern issues are, consider the questions grappled with by the 55 delegates at the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
OPINION: 6 ways to avoid the 'fiscal cliff'
The delegates were faced with deciding the composition of the House and Senate, the method of electing the president, the structure and jurisdiction of the federal courts, and whether to count slaves for the purpose of representation and taxation. They had to agree on a tariff policy, the slave trade, the assumption of state debts, the admission of new states, the procedure for amending the Constitution, the control of the militia, and restrictions upon the states, and general relationship of the national and state governments.
While a majority quickly decided that the Articles of Confederation (the precursor agreement to the Constitution) needed to be replaced by a new document that ensured a stronger national government. But there were conflicting opinions over how the new government should look. This was to be expected given the divergent economic and geographic circumstances of the states the delegates represented. On many of these issues, a resolution came only after a long and bitter debate. The Constitution was born only after a series of imaginative compromises were agreed upon.
Take for example, the Three-Fifths Compromise. At the insistence of delegates from southern states, Congress was denied the power to limit the slave trade for a minimum of 20 years, and slaves ? although denied the vote and not recognized as citizens by those states ? were allowed to be counted as 3/5 persons for the purpose of apportioning representatives and determining presidential electoral votes.
Most important, perhaps, delegates compromised on the thorny issue of apportioning members of Congress, an issue that had bitterly divided the larger and smaller states. The small states wanted each state to have the same number of representatives, and the large states wanted representation determined by population. Under a plan put forward by delegate Roger Sherman of Connecticut (known as the Connecticut Compromise), representation in the House of Representatives would be based on population, while each state would be guaranteed an equal two senators in the new Senate.
Although the delegates at the 1787 Convention faced an arduous challenge, the document they drafted continues to be the foundation of American government and political thought to this day. Compromise worked then, and it can work now.
Shortly after the work of the convention was completed, Thomas Jefferson penned a letter on the importance of compromise: ?It is necessary to give as well as take in a government like ours." And in another piece of correspondence, he echoed: "I see the necessity of sacrificing our opinions sometimes to the opinions of others for the sake of harmony.?
Earlier, on Sept. 17, 1787, the final day of the convention, Benjamin Franklin delivered a remarkable closing address to the proceedings. Biographer Walter Isaacson tells us that Franklin?s speech is ?perhaps the best ever written by anyone about the magic of the American system and the spirit of compromise that created it.?
?Mr. President,? Franklin begins, ?I confess that I do not entirely approve this Constitution at present; but sir, I am not sure I shall never approve it: For, having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that, the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment and to pay more respect to the judgment of others....
?I doubt too, whether any other convention we can obtain may be able to make a better Constitution; for when you assemble a number of men, to have the advantage of their joint wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those men, all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests, and their selfish views....The opinions I have had of its errors, I sacrifice to the public good...?
While Franklin put it most eloquently, a number of other delegates were similarly motivated. George Washington, for example, wrote that he ?was ready to have embraced any tolerable compromise that was competent to save us from impending ruin.?
In 1787, as the 13 colonies debated the merits of the proposed Constitution, John Adams told John Jay: ?The public mind cannot be occupied about a nobler object than the proposed plan of government. It appears to be admirably calculated to cement all America in affection and interest as one great nation. A result of accommodation and compromise cannot be supposed perfectly to coincide with any one's ideas of perfection. But all the great principles necessary to order, liberty, and safety are respected in it, and provision is made for correction and amendments as they may be found necessary.?

Today's lawmakers aren't simply tasked with forging a budget deal. They'll need to make tough decisions on the problems facing this country long after Jan. 1, 2013: the federal debt ceiling, entitlement reform, taxes, health care, unemployment, energy and environment, immigration, and education. The impasses are daunting, but they aren't insurmountable.
Washington should listen to the wisdom of the Founding Fathers for a moment. Our government isn?t broken. We have just momentarily forgotten how the Framers went about creating it.

The white we see is actually a mixture of light waves of different wavelengths. In a similar manner, the hum we call white noise is made of a combination of assorted sound frequencies. In either case, to be perceived as white, a stimulus must meet two conditions: The mix that produces them must span the range of our perception; and each component must be present at the exact same intensity. A research team in the Neurobiology Department, led by research student Tali Weiss and Dr. Kobi Snitz, both in the group of Prof. Noam Sobel, decided to take up the challenge. They began with 86 different pure scents (each made of a single type of odor molecule) spanning the entire "smell map," diluted them to obtain similar intensities and then created blends. Each blend contained a different mixture of odors from various parts of the smell map. These blends were then presented in pairs to volunteers, who were asked to compare the two scent-blends.
The team discovered that the more odors that were blended together in the paired mixtures, the more the subjects tended to rate them as similar -- even though the two shared no common components. Blends that each contained 30 different odors or more were thought to be almost identical.
The researchers then created a number of such odor blends, giving them a nonsense name: Laurax. Once the subjects were exposed to one of the Laurax mixes and became accustomed to the smell, they were exposed to new blends -- mixtures they had not previously smelled. They also called some of these new blends "Laurax," but only if those contained 30 or more odors and these encompassed the range of possible smells. In contrast, mixtures made of 20 scents or fewer were not referred to as Laurax. In other words, Laurax was a white smell. In a follow-up experiment, volunteers described it as being neutral -- not pleasant, but not unpleasant.
"On the one hand," says Sobel, "The findings expand the concept of 'white' beyond the familiar sight and sound. On the other, they touch on the most basic principles underlying our sense of smell, and these raise some issues with the conventional wisdom on the subject." The most widely accepted view, for instance, describes the sense of smell as a sort of machine that detects odor molecules. But the Weizmann study implies that our smell systems perceive whole scents, rather than the individual odors they comprise.
Also participating in the research were Adi Yablonka in the group of Prof. Noam Sobel and Dr. Elad Schneidman, also of the Neurobiology Department.

JOS, Nigeria (AP) ? An activist says nine people have died in an attack on a Christian village in central Nigeria, a region beset by religious and ethnic tensions.
Mark Lipdo, head of the Stefanos Foundation, a Christian advocacy group, said Tuesday that witnesses told him gunmen in army uniforms sprayed bullets from a van Monday night as they sped along the road leading to Plateau state's airport.
Army spokesman Capt. Musa Salisu could not immediately be reached for comment.
Police chief Emmanuel Ayeni declined to give details of the attack, saying authorities were investigating.
Violence between Christians and Muslims has killed hundreds in the state in recent years. Meanwhile, both communities have accused security authorities of taking sides. The Plateau state sits between Nigeria's mainly Christian south and its mostly Muslim north.

BUKULMEZ, Turkey (Reuters) - Syrian warplanes bombed two rebel bases near the Turkish border on Monday sending hundreds of people fleeing across the frontier.
The attacks on the Free Syrian Army positions (FSA) in Atima and nearby Bab al-Hawa came a day before NATO and Ankara were due to start assessing where to station surface-to-air missiles on the Turkish side of the 900-km (560-mile) boundary.
Turkey, a big supporter of rebels fighting to oust Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, has repeatedly scrambled jets along the border. It has also responded in kind when shells from the conflict have landed inside Turkey, underlining fears Syria's 20-month-old revolt could spread to destabilize the region.
Ankara has rejected Syrian complaints that the NATO Patriots were "provocative" and stressed they would be used only to defend Turkish territory, not to create a no-fly zone inside Syria that rebels have long demanded as a way to neutralize Assad's massive air power.
Syrian planes dropped around six bombs on a rebel base near the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, said activists.
"There were lots of people injured ... I saw many wounded people on the border before I was brought here," FSA member Mahmoud Ahmad told Reuters after arriving in Turkey for treatment.
The attack also flattened tents being set up nearby for displaced people inside Syria by a Turkish charity, but no one was inside them at the time, Turkey's state-run Anadolu agency reported. Reuters television footage showed tattered shelters and a bomb crater near a line of tanks.
Two Syrian jets fired five rockets at an FSA base in Atima, around 2km (1 mile) from the border, said opposition activist Ahmed, who lives nearby. "Three have hit farm areas and another two hit buildings near the base."
Rebels fired anti-aircraft guns at the jets but they were flying too high to be hit, activists said. "I think the reason for the raid may have something to do with increased weapons movements (from Turkey)," Ahmed said.
Several hundred Syrians fled into Turkey after the Atima raid and were being taken care of by the Turkish army.
The Turkish Anatolian news agency said an anti-aircraft shell fired during clashes in another Syrian border town, Harem, hit the roof of a house in the Turkish district of Reyhanli but caused no casualties.
Syrian rebels have been tightening their hold on farmland and urban centres to the east and northeast of Damascus, and have seized a string of military bases in the past 10 days.
PATRIOT DEPLOYMENT
A joint Turkish-NATO team will start work on Tuesday assessing where to put Patriot missiles, how many will be needed and the number of foreign troops to be sent to operate them.
Turkey is reluctant to be drawn into the fighting, but the proximity of Syrian bombing raids to its border is straining its nerves. It is worried about its neighbor's chemical weapons, the refugee crisis on its border, and what it says is Syrian support for Kurdish militants on its own soil.
Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, which started with peaceful demonstrations for reform but grew into demands for the overthrow of 42 years of dynastic rule by Assad and his late father, Hafez al-Assad.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, speaking to the Austrian paper Der Standard, urged Assad to consider a political settlement with the opposition.
"The military option is not sustainable. The conflict should be resolved via a political process. (Assad) should realize that he has gone too far, too deep, and how can he continue this way? He should listen to what his people would like," he said.
Attacks by mainly Sunni Muslim rebels against Assad's forces have become increasingly effective and deadly. The president, from Syria's Alawite minority which is linked to Shi'ite Islam, has responded with devastating artillery and air bombardment.
Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled their country and more than 2 million more have been displaced. The opposition said last week $60 billion would be needed for reconstruction.
With winter coming, the suffering will grow as displaced families seek food, medicine and shelter. The U.N. chief said only 40 percent of needed humanitarian aid has been made available.
EUPHRATES DAM CAPTURED
The military installations rebels have captured in the last 10 days include a major facility in the northern province of Aleppo and several bases around the capital Damascus.
On Monday activists said rebels took control of the Tishreen dam on the Euphrates river, east of the city of Aleppo. Internet video footage showed gunmen inside what appeared to be the control room, undamaged following the rebel capture.
Other footage showed rebels opening up ammunition boxes, including one marked RPG (rocket-propelled grenades), which they said were seized from Assad's forces holding the dam.
On Sunday rebels said they had captured a helicopter base east of Damascus, their latest gain in a battle that is drawing nearer to Assad's seat of power in the capital.
The Marj al-Sultan base, 15 km (10 miles) from Damascus, is the second military facility on the outskirts of the city reported to fall to Assad's opponents this month. Activists said rebels destroyed two helicopters and taken 15 prisoners.
"We are coming for you Bashar!" a rebel shouted in an internet video of what activists said was Marj al-Sultan. Restrictions on non-state media meant it could not be verified.
The rebels have been tightening their hold on farmland and urban centres to the east and northeast of Damascus while a major battle has been under way for a week in the suburb of Daraya near the main highway south.
"We are seeing the starting signs of a rebel siege of Damascus," opposition campaigner Fawaz Tello said from Berlin. "Marj al-Sultan is very near to the Damascus Airport road and to the airport itself. The rebels appear to be heading toward cutting this as well as the main northern artery to Aleppo."
Assad's core forces, drawn mainly from his Alawite sect, are entrenched in the capital.

Nintendo's new console is an anomaly in the game console ecosystem, but not for Nintendo. The company that -- in just the last decade -- popularized stylus-powered gaming, microphone-powered gaming and motion-based gaming, is once again pushing game control inputs forward. And just like its previous consoles, lessons learned from past hardware build the foundation of its latest effort: the Wii U and its bizarre-looking, but conventionally named, "GamePad."
The Wii U console itself, for instance, looks almost exactly like the original Wii. It's longer (6.75 inches vs. 6 inches for the Wii), a bit rounder on the edges, and there's an HDMI port out back, but overall it's quite similar to its squatter predecessor. It's enough that you'd get the two confused if they were sitting in the same entertainment center. Naturally, the beefed-up internals and Wii backwards compatibility mean you'll likely be replacing the ol' virtual tennis machine should you choose to pick one up.
Of course, the GamePad is the real star of the show here, bolstered by Nintendo's ambitious "TVii" experiment. Everyone's favorite Italian plumber looks super in HD, no doubt, but how software employs the multifaceted touchscreen tablet / traditional game controller hybrid is what really matters. So, how does the Wii U fare? Find out below.

The U.S. Congress and President Obama created the ?fiscal cliff? last year as they negotiated ways to lift the federal debt ceiling. The cliff causes two things to happen at midnight on December 31, 2012. First, a range of temporary tax cuts will expire as the Budget Control Act of 2011 goes into full effect. For American small businesses, this will mean the end of several key tax breaks and the imposition of new taxes. Secondly, mandatory budget cuts will be imposed at the federal level. The result has the U.S. economy ? and, with it, U.S. businesses ? hurdling towards its own cliff.

On Wednesday Nov 7th a nonprofit advocacy group released a survey completed by small business owners about the fiscal cliff. Almost 75% of them are worried about how the payroll tax increase will affect their employees. With the economy the way it is many employees have stretched their paychecks to the limit and addition expenses will really put them in a bind.
Other than how the fiscal cliff will affect their employees? finances, business owners are worried about the impact that will transfer to their business through their employees. For example one of the areas will be education. If grants and scholarships are cut there will be less opportunity for employees to improve their skills and knowledge through education.
Taxation
When given the choice of raising taxes on the top 2% or drastic spending cuts the majority of the small business owners support the tax hike. Part of this is surely attributed to the fact that many small business owners aren?t in the top 2%. But most of them are also concerned about the effect of the spending cuts.
Many small business owners support raising the capital gains tax which is capped at 15%. Again this may be due to the fact that many small business owners? income isn?t structured as capital gains.
Many of the tax cuts set to expire were created directly for small businesses or will affect the middle class. Many owners are certainly a large percentage of their customers are middle class.

Police have identified the four servicemen who died in Midland, Texas when a freight train plowed into a parade float carrying wounded veterans and their spouses at a crossing, two of whom saved their wives by pushing them to safety before they died.
Army SGM Gary Stouffer, 37, and 47-year-old Army SGM Lawrence Boivin were pronounced dead at the scene, police said, after the float carrying wounded veterans and their families to an honorary banquet was struck by a Union Pacific train around 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The train struck as the parade was crossing the tracks, turning the honorary event into a scene of destruction.
Army SGT Joshua Michael, 34, and 43-year-old Army SGM William Lubbers were transported from the scene and later pronounced dead at Midland Memorial Hospital, according to the Midland Police.
Seventeen people in all were transported to the hospital and 10 were treated and released. Four people were in stable condition and one is in critical condition as of this morning.
Michael was killed in the crash but was able to save his wife, his mother-in-law told the Amarillo Globe-News.
"He pushed his wife off the float -- my daughter," Mary Hefley told the newspaper. "He was that kind of guy. He always had a smile on his face. He would do for others before he would do for himself."
Hefley said Michael retired from the Army due to health reasons.
According to a website set up by Cory Rogers, a friend of Michael's family, the father of two completed two tours of duty in Iraq, and received two Purple Hearts after being wounded in combat.
"His love of country and for his wife, Daylyn and their two children shone through," his family said in a statement on the site. "The family appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers in this very difficult time."

He said that his wife was hurt in the crash, but survived. Boivin died in his arms, Garza said.
Garza said that he and his wife Denise lost their son in Afghanistan seven years ago. On Thursday they were driving in a separate car about a block away, helping escort the floats.
"I looked in my rear view mirror. That's when I saw the train hit the float," he said. "I made a quick U-turn to get back up there. The first person who was there was Lawrence. I had to help him out ... and he gave me his last breath ... He actually pushed [his wife] off the float and then he got hit."
Denise Garza said that the entire incident happened very fast.
"Everybody was getting help in two seconds. Everybody had help. It was like the best response," she said. "It was terrible. The worst thing I've ever seen in my whole life."
About two dozen veterans and their spouses had been sitting in chairs on the back of a flatbed tractor-trailer decorated with American flags and signs identifying each veteran.
The first truck crossed the tracks in time, but the second did not, according to Hamid Vatankhah, a witness who owns a used car lot near the scene of the crash.
Sirens from the police cars in the parade may have drowned out the sound of the approaching train, Vatankhah said.
The impact, witnesses say, was deafening as the train plowed through the parade float crossing the tracks in an industrial part of Midland.
"Some people were able to jump, and some that were sitting in wheelchairs on top couldn't do nothing about it," Vatankhah added.
Patricia Howle was sitting traffic with her daughter watching the parade go by when she heard the train honking its horn.
"I just saw people going under the train. There was blood. There was blood all over," said eyewitness Eservando Wisler.
A Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange said it appeared safety devices at the crash site were working. But there were conflicting reports by eyewitnesses about whether the gates went down at the crossing when the train approached.
"I saw the truck crossing the tracks. About halfway across the gates started coming down. The truck tried to blow his horn to get the other people in front of him out of the way. The gates actually hit the first people on the trailer," witness Michael Briggs said.
"Our preliminary findings indicate that the lights and gates were working at the time of the incident and that our train crew sounded the locomotive horn," said Lange.

When Modern Living Services puts on its Jingle & Jazz Dessert Rush at the end of this month, Andrea Mallonee will be beaming with excitement.
Proud, not just because the organization plans to build a $3 million residential project in Kennewick for the developmentally disabled, but because she, as president of MLS, and a handful of other mothers who labored with her, endured the pains of birthing the project.
Ten years ago, Mallonee was at her wits? end, the emotionally-crushed mother of a 5-year-old daughter who couldn?t be normal.
That?s not how motherhood began for her.
Initially, her daughter, Lindsey, now 19, was a delightful, active infant, who won the baby derby at the Benton Franklin Fair in 1994 ? bagging a six-months? supply of diapers.
But as Mallonee watched Lindsey go through toddler years, she saw the youngster struggling first with motor skills, then tantrums.
Lindsey was 5 and attending Keewaydin Discovery Center when repeated outbursts at the preschool prompted Mallonee to consult a behavioral scientist, who advised that Lindsey had ?auditory perception disorder.?
Mallonee took no solace in the prognosis.
?When I came to the realization something was wrong with her, I had a complete meltdown,? she siad. ?I collapsed in the hallway and just cried, probably for two hours.?
For the following decade, Mallonee?s sole quest was to find educational resourses for her daughter. Mallonee said at times she felt she was at the mercy of professionals, medications and even her own daughter, whose aggressive behavior could turn threatening.
?A family trip to Disney World was horrible,? Mallonee said, noting that nothing seemed to assuage Lindsey?s unpredictable aggressive behaviors.
It wasn?t until Mallonee found respite help through the state that she felt some relief in dealing with her daughter?s behaviors.
Today, Lindsey lives in independent housing in the Tri-Cities with 24-hour care assistance, thanks to special state-sponsored assistance called the Waiver Program that provides 80 hours of respite and personal relief for families dealing with issues like those Lindsay has. Mallonee said she feels fortunate to have the help because the Waiver Program?s waiting list is so long, opportunities occur usually only after a client dies.
Terry Buck, case resource manager for the Washington State Division of Development Disabilities, says MLS? vision to provide affordable independent residential services for the developmentally disabled adult population in the Tri-Cities addresses a huge problem.
?It is the biggest concern I have,? said Buck, who has nearly 13 years experience as a case manager, and 27 years in public education in the Pacific Northwest, most of it in special education.
Buck said his 67 clients on ?no-paid services? range from 15 years old to more than 60. Most of them are on their own, many without a caregiver or support system.
One, a man in his mid-40s from Finley, lost his support when his elderly father died a couple of years ago, leaving the son no daily care provider, no social contact, no transportation and no place to call home.
?He is still struggling,? Buck said. ?He has had four different residences and is currently couch surfing. The man, who Buck declines to identify for privacy reasons, has no one to help him with personal and financial issues, either.
?He?s a vulnerable guy and his story can be duplicated so many times it breaks my heart,? said Buck.
Buck said there is help for developmentally disabled students in public schools, but once they reach 21 years, the services end.
?
?These kids graduate to very limited services,? he said. ?Most of them spend much of their days watching TV, and that?s not right. They absolutely desire the same things as the average Joe. If we would only provide a few opportunities it would make such a difference in their lives.?
Buck said providing independent residential facilities with 24-hour managed care for developmentally disabled adults in the Tri-Cities also will address another even more invisible issue ? that being the aging parents of the developmentally disabled.
?The strain on an aging parent/care provider is real. These parents are fragile and they can?t do it forever,? said Buck, who added that the best answer is to encourage and support nonprofit groups like MLS and SEC.
?I would like to see what our community can provide without relying on government monies or political decisions. As our developmentally disable folks get older, their needs don?t go away. MLS is stepping up to help these people have the tools to be successful.?
MLS was created by mothers like Mallonee, who want to see developmentally disabled individuals have a meaningful and safe future where they will live, work and enjoy life in independent housing without having to be dependent on their aging parents.
The MLS story shows just how much a group of motivated moms can do. From being a support group meeting monthly in homes to meeting weekly at a pizza parlor only four years ago, MLS plans to break ground in April in Kennewick on a 14-unit residential complex.
The Kennewick Perry Suites on about two acres at Kennewick Avenue and Perry Street will consist of four buildings for a total of just under 10,000 square feet of living area. Each 650 sq.-ft. unit will provide a bath, kitchen, living and dining area and one bedroom. There also will be a common area for residents to share, and 24-hour on-site residential care.
The nearly $3 million project has $1.9 million in U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds, plus a $200,000 grant from Benton County and two grants from the Washington State Housing Trust Fund, said Sherry Erickson, who is MLS? treasurer.
The project is a virtual carbon copy of a residential complex called Edison Terrace South in Kennewick that was built by the Shalom Ecumenical Council, based in Richland.
Erickson said SEC ?held our hand? in bringing the Kennewick Perry Suites through the HUD application process. In addition to offering their building design, SEC connected MLS to a financing consultant, Goodale and Barbieri of Spokane, which shepherded completion of the 1,000-page application to HUD and invited their architect, Stenkamp Architecture of Richland, to join the project.
?SEC?s mentoring was extremely important to us. I don?t think we could?ve done as much as we did without them. It was vital to getting this to happen,? Mallonee said.
Erickson noted it all started four years ago with a chance encounter between two moms, herself and Mallonee, who was making a sales call at a business where Erickson was the general manager.
A phone call from Erickson?s developmentally disabled teenage daughter interrupted their business meeting. As Mallonee waited, hearing one side of the phone call, she noticed Erickson trying to calm her daughter.
?The way she talked was the way I talked to Lindsay,? Mallonee said.
Erickson apologized about the ?special circumstances at home,? and Mallonee said she could understand because of having a similar problem at her home.
?We had coffee. It was a great exchange and we totally related. We laughed together. It was a true bond,? Mallonee said.
That happenchance meeting led to forming a support group with moms of other developmentally disabled children being invited. Eventually, the group brainstormed about what they could envision for their children?s future.
The original vision was for a university campus-like place with residential, employment and recreational, and educational opportunities, a full spectrum of activities complemented with 24-hour supervision/assistance. In retrospect, Mallonee says she was overwhelmed with that vision. The current housing project is a scaled-down approach.
?It was too much,? she said.
But now that HUD funding is secure, land, an architect and design are in hand, Mallonee is excited about the future.
Once the project is built, a separate board of directors and a hired property manager will decide how the facility is operated and who will live there, Mallonee said.
Mallonee and Erickson said although their own daughters are not likely to end up at Kennewick Perry Suites, others will benefit.
Kennewick Perry Suites will serve a higher functioning level of developmentally disabled residents and for individuals with other types of disabilities, Erickson said.
?There are other models and levels of services needed. Once we get the bricks and mortar done (for Kennewick Perry Suites) we aren?t stopping, but will begin formulating our next project,? Mallonee said. ?In a sense, I feel like I?m back to where I started 15 years ago (with Lindsey). It?s like being on an endless wheel, back to the beginning again,? she said.

The Irving, Texas, company said a nationwide worker strike crippled its ability to make and deliver its products. Its brands also include Ding Dongs, Ho Ho's and Dolly Madison.
Hostess?had warned employees that it would file a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to unwind its business and sell assets if plant operations didn't return to normal levels by Thursday evening. The privately held company filed for Chapter 11 protection in January, its second trip through bankruptcy court in less than a decade.
"Many people have worked incredibly long and hard to keep this from happening, but now?Hostess?Brands has no other alternative than to begin the process of winding down and preparing for the sale of our iconic brands," CEO Gregory F. Rayburn said in a letter to employees posted on the company website.
He added that all employees will eventually lose their jobs, "some sooner than others."
Thousands of members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union went on strike last week after rejecting in September a contract offer that cut wages and benefits.?Hostess?had already reached a contract agreement with its largest union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Hostess?has said that production at about a dozen of the company's 33 plants has been seriously affected by the strike. Three plants were closed earlier this week.
The company, founded in 1930, was fighting battles beyond labor costs. Competition is increasing in the snack space and Americans are increasingly conscious about healthy eating.?Hostess?also makes Dolly Madison, Drake's and Nature's Pride snacks.

Epic Smokehouse, the new upscale barbecue restaurant at 1330 S. Fern Street?in Pentagon City, won NAIOP?s ?Award of Merit? in the ?Best Interiors, Retail Project? category. The restaurant?s interior ? which is heavy on wood, leather and concrete ? was designed by Collective Architecture and built by rand* Construction?Corporation.
Ballston?s new 800 North Glebe Road building, meanwhile, won NAIOP?s ?Award of Excellence? for ?Best Building, 4 Stories and Above.? The 10-story office building was developed by the JBG Companies, designed by Cooper Carry and built by Clark Construction.
The award ceremony was held last night in Tysons Corner.
?The event was sold out with over six hundred-fifty people in attendance as twenty-three awards were presented in the following categories: Transactions, Interiors, Marketing, Buildings and Membership,? according to a press release. ?The Awards Dinner was an opportunity to?celebrate significant new contributions to Northern Virginia by the commercial, industrial and mixed-use real estate community.?
