Hitachi buys UK nuclear project

The UK's nuclear expansion plans have been boosted after Japan's Hitachi signed a ?700m deal giving it rights to build a new generation of power plants.

Hitachi is to buy Horizon Nuclear Power, which was intending to build reactors on existing sites at Wylfa, Anglesey, and Oldbury, near Bristol.

Hitachi is buying Horizon from Germany's E.On and RWE, which are withdrawing from the UK nuclear market.

Prime Minister David Cameron said it was a major step for the UK.

"This is a decades-long, multi-billion pound vote of confidence in the UK, that will contribute vital new infrastructure to power our economy.

"It will support up to 12,000 jobs during construction and thousands more permanent highly skilled roles once the new power plants are operational, as well as stimulating exciting new industrial investments in the UK's nuclear supply chain. I warmly welcome Hitachi as a major new player in the UK energy sector," he said.

UK engineering companies Babcock International and Rolls-Royce have signed preliminary contracts to join the Hitachi deal, which the Japanese company said should be completed by the end of November.

There will then be regulatory issues to clear, but once Hitachi's reactor design is approved by the necessary authorities the company intends to build 6 gigawatts of nuclear capacity, with the first plant generating power in the first half of the next decade.

Up to 6,000 jobs are expected to be created during construction at each site, thousands more in the supply chain, and a further 1,000 permanent jobs at both locations once operational.

Dependency

The Horizon venture, based at Brockworth, Gloucester, currently employs about 90 people and was set up in 2009 as part of the drive to meet the UK's carbon reduction goals and secure energy demand as old power plants are decommissioned.

But RWE and E.On put the business up for sale in March after Germany's move to abandon nuclear power in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster.

A consortium made up of EDF and British Gas-owner Centrica has maintained its interest but the two companies have still to decide whether to build two reactors at Hinckley Point, Somerset.

Companies involved in the nuclear industry have expressed caution over entering the UK market. Because of the huge capital costs, stretched over many years, companies want some certainty over how much they might be paid for the electricity generated by their plants.

Last week, the chief executive of EDF, Vincent de Rivaz, told MPs that his company needed safeguards from the government that the finances of future nuclear deals would be "fair".

Delays over decision-making and financing have led to doubts that new power capacity will come on stream before existing plants go offline. A so-called "energy gap" is likely to lead to rising prices and a greater dependency on gas imports.

Earlier this month, the energy regulator Ofgem warned that the UK risks running out of energy generating capacity in the winter of 2015-16. Its report predicted that the amount of spare capacity could fall from 14% now to only 4% in three years.

However, the government said that its forthcoming Energy Bill would ensure that there was secure supply.

With so many uncertainties still to be resolved, investment in the UK nuclear sector was still a "leap of faith", said George Borovas, head of nuclear projects at global law firm Pillsbury. So, he said, Hitachi's decision was a "significant... vote of confidence in the UK nuclear programme".

'Milestone'

Hitachi's proposed facilities will use its advanced boiling water technology, which is already used in four reactors in Japan. Mr Borovas said this technology was a "proven success", adding: "This should be very helpful with respect to its licensing in the UK and also opens up the possibility of significant export credit agency and commercial financing from Japan."

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said: "Hitachi bring with them decades of expertise, and are responsible for building some of the most advanced nuclear reactors on time and on budget, so I welcome their commitment to helping build a low-carbon, secure-energy future for the UK."

Shadow energy secretary Caroline Flint called on the government to use this as an opportunity to encourage investment in nuclear research and design.

Unions also welcomed Hitachi's move, with Mike Clancy, general secretary designate of Prospect, saying: "The Horizon venture is an important milestone in securing future low-carbon energy generation capacity within the UK and its importance to local and national economies cannot be overstated.

"While Hitachi's advanced boiling water reactor design has yet to undergo the UK's generic design assessment approval process, it is a proven technology and therefore any construction in the UK will benefit from lessons learned from its construction in Japan."

Health and Fitness: Understanding Plastic Surgery

A preliminary consultation regarding a cosmetic surgery involves meeting with a cosmetic surgeon along with his staff and medical assistants. Factors such as previous surgeries, health background plus recently taken medications, plus the person's general physical and emotional condition are greatly taken into account by the assigned doctor. These issues require time to be discussed completely as an important part of surgery preparations. Additional factors that will need attention before any cosmetic surgeries are definitely the time period of the recovery, probable complications, how to handle these risks, plus the limitations attributed to one's nose surgical procedure, these things must be discussed as a significant section of surgical procedure plans.

Risks can vary based on the process and also the individual involve, whether it is pain related conditions or maybe infections. Ask for the photos of the patients, which includes their looks before the surgery and also the after photos. You may also want to learn about the anesthesia to be used and the probable risks it might cause you.

The desired change from a surgery procedure will be relying on the final results of the operation and the recommendation therapy processes. Perhaps the relatively simple surgeries are hoped by surgery patients to be carried out nicely and without imperfections if possible. A small margin of error can simply ruin self-satisfaction.

If a cosmetic is considered, it is essential to choose a doctor whom patients can entirely rely on, and whose job they could admire with highest recommendations. A doctor with many pleased clients may benefit a lot from his good reputation through having an enjoyable reputation as an effective cosmetic surgeon.

For individuals thinking about cosmetic surgery, safety is a big issue. It's the patient's job to be fully informed consumer. Consequently, ask needed inquiries to receive the best outcomes such as the state where the doctor is usually licensed to do cosmetic surgery, his certifications from the board of plastic surgery, together with his years of experience as a cosmetic surgeon, if he has monitoring devices or even life-saving equipment, how and who administers anesthesia, and the expected recovery from the process.

Think about a surgical procedure that will be completed in a surgeon's office. You will find differences between a hospital-based procedure and those done within an office. The surgeon's office may be private, convenient but the setting may not be safe as well. Assuming that the physician has his right qualifications or amenities for safe operation may give you disappointments. Examining his affiliation and association with organizations certified to give credentials can give assurance and also as an additional information to the surgeon or perhaps an ambulatory center's certifications.

Removing Soggy Drywall in 8 Not-So-Easy Steps

Step One: Mark

The water line (the highest point that floodwaters reached) will be evident on the drywall. Mark a cut line six to 12 inches above that using either a laser level or marking around the room at a uniform height above the floor. Then snap a chalk line. This might seem unnecessarily fussy at this point when all you?re trying to do is remove soggy drywall to ventilate the wall. But a neat job now will greatly speed the installation of replacement drywall.

Step Two: Place Tarps

Place a tarp at the base of the wall to catch debris. The tarp is a smooth surface that will keep the damaged area cleaner and make it easier to scoop debris off the floor.

Step Three: Cut

Cut along the line with a sharp utility knife.

Step Four: Puncture

Take a framing hammer and knock a hole in the drywall that will allow you to reach through to the other side. Make sure you do this between the studs, and below the cutline so that you?re damaging the drywall that you?re going to remove anyway.

Step Five: Remove and Test

First, remove the plates from your electrical outlets and pry off baseboard trim. Next, wearing gloves, reach into the hand hole and pull the drywall away from the studs. The first couple of bays will be difficult. Once you?ve opened a large area, use a flat bar, hammer, or a flat-nosed shovel to pry the drywall away from the studs.

While you?re doing this, check for dampness on the exterior walls. Get your hand in the insulation. Your goal here is to remove the drywall up to the point where the insulation is dry, so that anything that gets damp is replaced. So if the insulation still feels wet where you made your first cut line, make another test cut higher up the wall.

NOTE: Removal of electrical cable, outlets, and outlet boxes (and their replacement) should be left to a licensed electrician.

Step Six: Transport

Transport the debris outside. The ideal is that you already have a Dumpster, dump truck, or garbage hauler so that you won?t have to remove the debris twice. If that?s not possible, pile the debris on the ground and cover it with a tarp to keep it from getting wetter and heavier. Weigh the tarp down or stake it in place do it doesn?t blow away.

Remember that drywall is heavy?especially waterlogged drywall. But there are several ways to move it. One is to slide it inside a tarp. Large chunks can also be placed in a wheelbarrow or dropped into a plastic garbage can, which you can slide out of the house or carry on a hand truck.

Whatever you do, figure out debris transport before you cut your first piece of drywall and you?ll have an easier time overall.

Step Seven: Dispose of the Remainder

Cut away soggy fiberglass insulation and stuff it into contractor trash bags. Remove drywall screws by backing them out or snapping them off. Same goes for drywall nails.

Step Eight: Ventilate

Fans speed evaporation and reduce the chance of condensation forming inside walls and the formation of mold.

Post-Flood Installation

To put your walls back together after the flood, you'll need to have an electrician replace outlets and wiring, and perhaps the receptacle boxes as well. At PM, it's always been our view that a homeowner who does his or her homework is competent to do basic electrical work, but flood damage is a special case. Flood-damaged electrical materials should be replaced by a pro, who can also evaluate the home's grounding and bonding system. After that's done, you can move on to replacing the insulation you cut out and hanging new drywall.

To do that, cut each piece of replacement insulation so that it firmly butts against the piece above. Staple it in place. Next, cut the replacement piece of drywall and screw it to the studs. Use one screw on each side of the joint (that is, one screw in the new drywall and one screw on the older piece of drywall above). Spread taping compound on the seam and embed paper tape in the compound. Properly embedded paper tape is strong and easy to apply. Strike off excess drywall compound with a 6 in. knife and let the compound dry. Sand off ridges and bumps before applying the next layers of compound.

For plenty more on installing drywall, check out our guides to doing it well and finishing it right.

I love these infographics!?
?
I think this info is relevant for both online and offline marketers. It's interesting that most of the focus is on Facebook and Twitter. I understand Facebook but it seems weird that businesses are focusing more time on Twitter then they are on Facebook or Blog content...?
?
I definitely think spending time/money on blog content would be prioritized above Twitter in particular...?
?
I guess it depends on the business too.

Hello from the Cambridge Innovation Center (Hubspot?s old haunt!) Yes, social media can seem like a ?time suck? to some CEOs and they may say that they want to spend less time on social media but this is about education - if you asked CEOs if they wanted to look and use alternate ways to participate in discussion, drive engagement, increase visibility and sales and address customer service then the response may not be ?we want to spend less time on this?. With regards to which channels, this is all about understanding your target audiences and being present where they are, so to Facebook or not to Facebook (ooh, we feel a blog post coming on) is about the your industry, your audiences and your objectives.

I think that 1/3 CEO statistic can be interpreted in different ways. I thought it meant that the CEO or the proprietor specifically wanted to spend less time on social media, and maybe give the role to someone else or to outsource. I thought it meant that, currently, many owners and CEOs do the social media, but don't want it as part of their duties.

Beautiful infograph! It's a positive sign that so many SBs are willing to invest money into their social media presence and shows that they understand the importance of social features including social, search, and content marketing.?
?
I think the percentage number for SB's using Facebook as their primary social media tool is pretty much the norm, wondering how their personal website or blog activity plays into these numbers.

Leopard Seals Suck Up Dinner

Like whales, this Antarctic predator can strain small prey from the water with sieve-like teeth

leopard seal Image: Gump Stump/Wikimedia Commons

The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is one of Antarctica?s top predators. It kills penguins and smaller seals by biting them with sharp canine teeth and repeatedly smashing them against the ocean surface to flay and dismember them. But it now seems that this seal is also equipped to tackle smaller prey.

David Hocking from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and his colleagues have shown that the leopard seal eats krill like a whale, by sucking them into its mouth and sieving them through special teeth. Other scientists had predicted this behaviour from the shape and arrangement of the seal?s teeth, but this is the first time that it has been observed and filmed. The researchers' results are published in Polar Biology.

By switching between two feeding styles, the leopard seal can dine from both the top and bottom of the Southern Ocean?s food web. ?This is equivalent to a lion hunting down zebras, but also regularly feasting on ants or termites,? says Erich Fitzgerald from Museum Victoria, Melbourne, who was involved in the study.

?You?d expect that leopard seals would sacrifice something in not specializing on either large or small prey, but the authors persuasively argue that it is a dual specialist,? says Alexander Werth, a biologist from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. ?This helps to explain why leopard seals are so successful.?

From whale to seal
Hocking, Fitzgerald and Alistair Evans from Monash University studied leopard seals because the animals' trident-shaped postcanine teeth are similar to those of ancient fossil whales, such as Janjucetus, and the researchers were interested in the feeding habits of these whales. Because the seals were thought to use their postcanine teeth to strain krill from the water, it seemed possible that prehistoric whales did too. But as Hocking searched the literature to confirm this, ?it became apparent that nobody had ever actually observed leopard seals underwater [while they fed] on small prey like krill.?

To do that, Hocking travelled to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, the only institution in the world that houses leopard seals. Once there, he presented the resident seals, Casey and Sabine, with four small fish sticking headfirst out of a plastic box. At her very first go, Sabine sucked a fish out and expelled the excess water through the sides of her mouth. Hocking called up his team: ?Yep, they do it, all right!?

Casey and Sabine repeatedly used the same technique. Their thick lips allowed them to create suction, and their interlocking trident-shaped teeth imprisoned ingested fish or krill when the animals blew out the ingested water. California sea lions lack such complex teeth ? when the same fish-primed box was presented to them, they often blew their prey out of the sides of their mouth along with the water.

There is indirect evidence that wild leopard seals behave in the same way as the two captive seals. The team examined the skulls of 26 wild-caught adults and found that, whereas their gripping canines were often worn down, the postcanines showed fewer signs of wear, consistent with their role as sieves.

Although the team saw the captive seals sucking only one fish at a time, it seems likely that the animals could ingest krill en masse by using their flexible necks to strike at the heart of a shoal. Krill can constitute up to 83% of a leopard seal's diet in regions in which larger prey are in short supply. One individual that was dissected was found to have more than 10,000 freshly caught krill in its stomach. ?That?s a lot of krill to catch one at a time!? says Fitzgerald.

Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes off Canadian coast

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of British Columbia, southern Alaska and Hawaii, but later canceled it for the first two and downgraded it to an advisory for Hawaii.

Gerard Fryer, a senior geologist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the first waves hitting shore in Hawaii are smaller than expected.

The weather service also canceled a tsunami advisory for Oregon, leaving northern California as the only spot in North America still under a tsunami advisory.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

"It appears to be settling down," he said. "It does not mean we won't get another small wave coming through."

Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.

In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.

The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.

Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.

Taylor Swift Shares Contents of Fridge + Cooking Exploits

SwiftNapkin

bonapettit.com

Taylor Swift loves to bake. She lurves it. No, like, seriously. It?s passion of hers, next to writing songs about her exes. She also loves to make actual entrees. She shared what tickles her palette and what?s in her pantry and her fridge. If the music career ever goes on the fritz, which we doubt, since ?Red? is on pace to sell like a gazillion records, she can easily host her own cooking show.

While at home in Nashville, Swift shared what?s in her fridge, on the handwritten napkin below. We love her swirly, girly handwriting. Too. Freakin?. Cute.

But she went deeper about culinary concerns and challenges.

What?s always in her dressing room? Water. And lots of it. ?I drink, like, 10 bottles of water a day. That?s pretty much all we have in there. I think we used to have veggie trays. Now that I think of it, I have no idea why I don?t have dressing-room food anymore. Now I?m angry! I have to make a few calls?? Oooh, somebody on the Swift staff is gonna get a talking to.

The most challenging recipe? While she prefers to create simple dishes when entertaining to relieve the pressure of trying something out-of-the-box and ultimately screwing it up, she does get adventurous in the kitchen from time to time. ?I was at my friend Ashley?s house and she made this amazing honey-mustard salmon on rice. I got the recipe from her and made it for a dinner party with coconut rice. I?d never tried making fish before, so I?m still pretty proud to have that in my repertoire,? Swift gushed.

Her favorite dishes made by mom? Brisket and pot roast, which Swift says ?are out of this world.? Ma Swift also crafts toffee with brown sugar, chocolate chips, butter and saltines. Mmm. Our mouths are watering at the thought of it. ?Those are high-calorie days for me,? the tall and trim singer admitted.

Why winter is the best season for cooking: She loves to cook when it?s cold, since it?s a warm and festive time of year. ?Winter is my favorite season because of the food and the smells and the spices and how everyone is feeling everything so intensely and giving each other things,? she said. ?I love nutmeg and cinnamon. I bake pumpkin bread for everyone I know and make ginger molasses cookies and hot chocolate and chai. It?s the most perfect time for baking for people you love.?

We?d love to be invited over to T. Swizzle?s Nashville condo for some spiced chai and ginger molasses cookies.

She also elaborated on why she keeps the incredible, edible egg and Diet Coke in her refrigerator:

1. Eggs. I love making buckwheat crepes with ham, Parmesan cheese, and a fried egg on top. It?s my go-to breakfast.
2. Thinly sliced ham and chicken from the deli. I like to always have the option to make someone a sandwich.
3. Orange juice. I drink it with breakfast every morning.
4. Diet Coke. Because it understands me.
5. Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.
6. There?s always some sort of binge food ? like a tube of cinnamon rolls or a giant tub of cookie dough. Because I?m that girl.

Razer Blade Gaming Laptop Now Ships with Windows 8

The $2,499.99 version of the Razer Blade now comes with Windows 8.

Razer has announced that its Razer Blade laptop now comes in a touchy-feely Windows 8 flavor, but customers can still stick with the older Windows 7 Home Premium platform if they're not ready for the new experience. This gaming laptop costs $2,499.99, but it doesn't even sport a touchscreen to take advantage of the new Windows 8 Modern UI environment.

Razer's portable gaming rig sports a 17.3-inch Full HD LED-backlit screen, an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor with Hyper-Threading (2.2 GHz base, 3.2 GHz Turbo), the Intel HM77 Express chipset, 8 GB of DDR3 memory @ 1600 MHz, a 64 GB SSD with NVELO Dataplex software and a 500 GB 7200RPM HDD. It also packs an integrated Intel GMA HD GPU for normal every-day use and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M GPU with 2 GB of GDDR5 VRAM for gaming and other graphically-intense processing.

If the price of that laptop is too steep, Razer also offers a cheaper $1,999.99 version, packed with a 17.3-inch Full HD LED-backlit screen, an Intel Core i7 dual-core processor with Hyper-Threading (2.8 GHz base, 3.5 GHz Turbo), the Intel HM65 Express chipset and 8 GB of DDR3 memory @ 1333 MHz. On the GPU front, it has integrated Intel GMA HD graphics for typical computing, and an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU with 2 GB of DDR5 VRAM for gaming. This model does not offer Windows 8.

"The Razer Blade is only 0.88-inches thin, less than half the thickness of traditional gaming laptops of comparable performance," the company said. "Combined with an ultra-slim power supply, the entire system weighs less than seven pounds, less than half the weight of other gaming laptops, making it the lowest profile, lightest gaming laptop of its class. The Razer Blade features equivalent performance to some of the most powerful traditional gaming laptops, but at a fraction of their size and weight."

In addition to adding Windows 8 to its pricier gaming notebook, the company revealed its lineup of 2013/2014 mouse mats including the Razer Invicta, Razer Manticor, Razer Destructor 2 and Razer Megasoma 2. The company said these mats were engineered with new construction methods, and treated with all-new performance-boosting sensor-reactive surface coatings.

Commercial Cleaning Leads: Outsourcing to Cold Callers | Business ...

Cold calling has been widely used as an effective marketing method for decades. The office cleaning sector is one of today?s industries that uses the telephone in order to generate quality commercial cleaning leads and sales appointments. Through this lead generation tactic, generating interests can be done faster as compared to other procedures.

Though a top priority to catch the attention of potential leads for cleaning companies, many still find immense difficulty in establishing a successful marketing campaign.

Shouldn?t lead generation appointment setting for this industry be a walk in the park? After all, everybody needs these services all year ?round.

True that a lot of organizations need office cleaning aid to tidy up their environment. However, cleaning firms need to understand that they are not the only business within the industry. As such, competition cam become quite fierce as just about every marketer in the sector is vying for these commercial cleaning leads.

Now as stated at the start of this article, cold calling can indeed satiate the company?s need for commercial cleaning leads and appointments. However, b2b marketers who are new to this marketing art will still undergo a ?trial-and-error? phase before they can get the hang of speaking to their targeted decision makers. It will then lead to leads being ?stolen? by competitors.

One potential client that has fallen into the hands of competitors might be OK; but how about two, or three, or five, or ten? The longer the marketer stays in this phase, the more prospects will be contacted by other cleaning companies.

Ergo, the best solution to this ordeal is to outsource to professionals that already know everything there is to know about generating leads for the commercial cleaning industry. Professional b2b telemarketers are constantly trained by their superiors to perfect their arts and skills in getting quality interests from their target markets.

Data specialists can also be found in notable contact agencies. These people aid the campaign by assuring the cold callers to contact the prospects that reside in specific industries. This will safeguard the campaign from following false or dead leads. Ultimately, only potential clients from the call center?s client?s specifications will be reached.

Another benefit in getting the aid of business call center services in lead generation and appointment setting is they have already considered the need for cost efficient marketing services. As such, many contact firms have implemented pay per call telemarketing schemes to allow a more low-cost method for generating commercial cleaning leads. Through this payment program, contact agencies price their services (on average) at around $1 to $2 per call. Commercial cleaning companies need not worry about their campaign going downhill, even under low-cost payment schemes, as professionals are handling their marketing course.

There are other methods to generate leads for office cleaning companies. However, getting outsourced cold calling help will provide the campaign with the right kind of professionalism, precision targeting, and even cost efficiency for the commercial cleaning firm.

Business Ethics Insight: Most organizations of size have compliance ...

by Michael Josephson on October 27, 2012

A much more effective approach is compliance plus ethics.

Every aspect of an effective compliance-plus initiative should be grounded in the core values of ?ethics and honor including honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, fairness and caring. Strict compliance without these underlying ?values will not protect the company from resource-draining and demoralizing scandals and accusations nor will it build the company?s credibility or its reputation.

Compliance is about doing what you must do (or not doing what you?re not allowed to do) while ethics is doing what you should do. We must continually stress compliance is a minimum baseline but that many things that are permissible are not proper and that many things that are legal are not ethical.

Most stakeholders judge a company by its values.

How Food Became Technology [Excerpt]

Patent protection helped transform agriculture into agribusiness

wheat Image: Flickr.com / Antaean

Editor's Note: Excerpted from Bet the Farm: How Food Stopped Being Food, by Frederick Kaufman. With permission from the publisher, Wiley. Copyright ? Frederick Kaufman, 2012.

Once upon a time, nymphs, sprites, and spirits ruled every?cavern, tree, field, and brook, and a meal was plucked from?a bush, scooped from the mud, or carved from the carcass?of some unfortunate creature. Then everything changed.?A tribe of infidels and heretics decided it could no longer?leave something as important as breakfast, lunch, and dinner?to the vagaries of chance and the whimsy of the gods. These revolutionaries drained lakes, rerouted rivers, chopped down?forests, and slashed straight into the guts of Mother Earth.?They were the first farmers.

Ten thousand years of meddling with food has not made the?meddling any more popular, even if the history of civilization?has hinged on the science of food. Assyrian bas-reliefs and?Sumerian cuneiform tablets depict artificial pollination?and manipulating the sex life of plants was one of the first?technological feats that enabled our world of abundant fruits?and vegetables, meat, bread, and chocolate.

What set the earliest agriculturalists apart from the even?earlier hunter-gatherers? As the first farmers denuded nature,?hoarded seeds, and engineered crops, they most likely appeared?to be mad scientists, coaxing mutant monsters from the black?earth. Of course, we no longer think very much about the fact?that almost everything we eat has been?domesticated and that?domestication implies a history of human intervention. In fact,?most people are unaware that the typical supermarket and?green market varieties of apples, oranges, lettuce, and raspberries are not at all the same as their wild cousins.

Domesticated fruits and vegetables are generally larger?than their undomesticated counterparts. They are sweeter and?more aromatic. Compared to their great-great-grandparents,?modern fruits and vegetables have lost their fuzz, their fiber,?their thorns, and their puberty. A modern tomato?heirloom,?organic, process, vine-ripened, or otherwise?bears little?resemblance to its puny, sour, undomesticated relations that?sprout in the Peruvian Andes. Tomato breeding has changed?tomatoes down to the DNA, and the successful varieties that?have found their way into our supermarket carts have been?cloned and cloned again.

The red jungle fowl of Thailand eventually became a Perdue chicken. The extinct aurochs of the Fertile Crescent?eventually became Holstein cows. The primeval apples of?Kazakhstan eventually became Gala and Red Delicious.?Ancient tillers of the earth needed at least 300 years to domesticate corn and more than 1,000 years to?domesticate wheat. But no one really knows how weeds first?became crops.

Did mongrel grains serendipitously meld together and?sprout from the sewage dumps of sedentary fishing tribes?(a current theory), or was the domestication of wheat grasses,?pomegranates, and fig trees a willful act of genius? The most?ancient of these technologies created new forms of life. And?our fear of Frankenstein predates Mary Shelley's monster.??In? The Winter's Tale, William Shakespeare laced Perdita's?voice with anxiety and disgust as she condemned "Nature's?bastards," new varieties of flowers created by Elizabethan?methods of artificial pollination. Not to worry, argued Polixenes, for "Nature is made better by no mean / But Nature?makes that mean; so over that art / Which you say adds to?Nature, is an art / That Nature makes."

Telus plans LG Optimus G launch on November 13th, other carriers remain shy

LG Optimus G review unbranded

LG committed to launching its mostly superb Optimus G to the three major carriers in Canada sometime in November. Just which day the phone would arrive was left a mystery, though, even when Rogers started taking pre-orders. It's taking another provider to sort things out: Telus has gone on the record with plans to carry the quad-core smartphone starting November 13th, right at the height of what could be a busy month. That's all that the future-is-friendly network can say for now, although Rogers may have provided the remaining piece of the puzzle when it gave out $130 contract and $600 outright prices. We have a hunch Telus wouldn't want to be the exception to the rule.

Maintaining your mental health

News ? By Megan Lambert on October 12, 2012 7:00 AM

As the fall semester continues? and midterms rapidly approach, classes and extra-curricular activities tend to become more stressful.

Because of this stress, sickness and discomfort creep up on many students, lingering in the more vulnerable ones.? Stress and sickness leave students feeling weak, slow and disoriented.

Keeping a healthy mind and body while maintaining stress levels throughout the school year is an extremely important key to every student?s success. Making sure to receive adequate sleep, keep proper eating habits, and reach out for help or advice when needed will help lead to a healthier Logger physically, mentally and emotionally.

Maintaining mental health is a very important aspect to leading a healthy lifestyle. Doing well academically heavily relies on the state of one?s mental health. If you do not have the time and energy to study, you will be more likely to perform poorly academically.

Alternately, if students do not give their brains the energy they need to focus and study, all of their time and effort studying will go to waste.

This pressure to succeed academically leads many to increased stress levels. If a student cannot complete work for a class to the best of his or her ability in a timely matter, there must be many factors that lead up to this problem.

A lack of sleep, for instance, can easily lead to a weaker ability to retain information. For a student to perform at their best mental capability every day, they must receive, at the least, seven hours of sleep each night. The proper amount of sleep will help contribute to students? academic success, as well as their mental stamina throughout the day.

Eating healthy and maintaining a routine eating schedule is also vital to both physical and mental health. Three meals a day help nourish the mind and body for a long day of classes. Sustaining a well-balanced diet is also important because eating the correct amount of nutrients each day helps fuel the mind and body. Healthy eating is essential to perform one?s best each and every day.

Exercising regularly is also the key to keeping not only a student in a proper physical condition, but in a strong and successful mental condition. Exercising can help increase one?s attention level while also reducing one?s stress level. Physical activity helps prevent depression, while keeping one fit and overall more physically healthy.

Proper fitness patterns are very important in keeping one?s physical and mental condition in good shape. Whether you participate in a sport, frequent the gym or just go for a walk, it is very important to fit exercising into your schedule to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Asking for help or advice when needed is also an extremely smart and important thing to do. There are many people all over campus that would be happy to hear your problems and help you out. Advice or just a listening ear can be exactly what students need to encourage them to strive for success.

Physical as well as mental health are both key factors in keeping college students at their best. Although many students feel they are too busy to keep up with these tasks halfway through the semester, it is important to consider them. These suggestions, if used properly, will most likely help students manage their time and stress levels a little easier. Maintaining good physical and mental health leads to a happier and more relaxed campus for all.

If any student on campus feels stressed or discouraged for any reason, CHWS holds open counselor walk-in hours every weekday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

(AP) ? A Miami federal judge ruled in favor of a veteran who says shoddy hygiene practices at a Veterans Administration hospital caused his hepatitis infection.

Air Force veteran Robert Metzler and his wife in a lawsuit are seeking $30 million in damages. The ruling Thursday says damages will be settled later.

Many similar cases have been filed around the country.

The plaintiffs' attorney Ervin Gonzalez contends Metzler contracted hepatitis C after undergoing a colonoscopy with unclean equipment at the Miami VA hospital in 2007.

Metzler was one of thousands of veterans in five states to receive letters from the VA in 2009 urging them to get blood tests after being treated. The VA contended in court it did not cause Metzler's infection and should not pay damages.
