A summer series of sport and recreation events created to encourage more people to get active more often begins this weekend in Clutha.

The Clutha Country Summer Series began in 2008 and is designed to offer a simple group of fitness events for all ages.

The series will begin at Kaka Point on Sunday then move to Milton on February 3 and Lawrence on February 10 before finishing in Tapanui on February 17.

Participants can enter the run, walk, triathlon or duathlon, with the latter two events also allowing teams of two or three to take part.

Sport Clutha co-ordinator Tiny Carruthers said interest in multisport was growing.

''We have really achievable distances, good for a range of ages.''

There are four age categories - primary, secondary, open and masters (45+).

Those entered in at least three of the four stages will be in the draw for a Bauer Express mountain bike donated by Findlaters Yamaha.

The winner of the bike will be announced at the final stage in Tapanui on February 17.

Findlaters Yamaha owner Chris Evans said he was happy to support the event, and planned to take part this weekend.

Mr Carruthers said the summer series was well supported by Findlaters Yamaha, SouthRoads, Big River Radio and the Community Wellness programme.

Entries must be made on the official entry form, which is available at Sport Clutha's office at the Cross Recreation Centre or by logging on to www.sportotago.co.nz.
