Napolitano visits U.S.-Mexico border

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now/AP)- As politicians in Washington
continue to tackle immigration reform, today Homeland Security Secretary Janet
Napolitano took a trip to the U.S.-Mexican border.

Napolitano said she wanted to
check up with the Joint Field Command. She said there are a lot of numbers
tossed around when people talk about the border, but there are two that stand
out.

Apprehensions are down by 80
percent since 1980 and crime along the border has dropped dramatically.

"When you line up the
stats from the Arizona-Mexico border, you see that they are all trending and
significantly in the right direction," Napolitano said. "It is our goal to keep
that progress going."

The Arizona stop comes a
day after Napolitano swung through Texas to highlight how the new congressional
budget should ease the need to furlough or cut overtime hours for border
agents.
