Intel Says Haswell Will Extend Laptop Battery Life by 50 Percent

Intel has just made one very, very big claim: it reckons that its new Haswell chip will boost the battery life of laptops by a staggering 50 percent.

Intel's Architecture Group VP Rani Borkar is on the record as saying that laptops powered by Haswell will squeeze 50 percent more runtime out of a battery, and go up to 20 times longer in standby or idle mode. All that, apparently, with no loss in performance. Those numbers are a massive leap, and are, apparently, down to lower power requirements and a new power management chip that'll help reduce the energy draw.

Of course, we'll have to wait and see whether those claims convert to real-world performance increases?because we all know that power consumption claims can sometimes be optimistic. If they're genuine, though, then laptop battery life looks set for real and rapid boost. [Computer World via Engadget]
