The Heartburn Healing Diet

Millions of people in the world have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and about 100 million have at some point experienced acid reflux.

So, many of us understand the discomfort and acid reflux medication has never been more popular.

Have you tried to vary your diet to calm your acid reflux or heartburn? Food therapy helps, but unfortunately one of the best treatments is overall weight loss.

Others may still feel the discomforts of acid reflux and not need to lose weight. To help, check out this list of foods that prevent and cause heartburn.

11 Foods that Calm GERD

  1. Bread, toast, or brown rice cakes help soak up excess stomach acid
  2. Lean grilled or baked meats without high fat sauces or oils
  3. Other starches like sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, brown rice, and peas help to soak up acid
  4. Bananas, apples, and melons
  5. Egg whites
  6. Reduced fat cottage cheese and lower fat milks
  7. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower
  8. Black licorice, parsley, and ginger are known for their stomach healing properties
  9. Aloe calms digestion and is good for IBS as well
  10. Apple cider vinegar
  11. Non-peppermint gum can help increase saliva production to calm the esophagus

8 Foods that Trigger GERD

  1. High acid foods like citrus and tomatoes
  2. Spicy foods
  3. Caffeine and chocolate relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)
  4. High fat foods like fried foods or heavily saut?ed dishes. Even healthy foods like avocado can be a trigger if eaten on an empty stomach.
  5. Raw garlic and onions
  6. Mint candies and gum also relax the LES
  7. Alcohol, especially the more acidic beverages like a tannic or dry wine
  8. Bell peppers (not as common of a trigger)

These food suggestions do not work for everyone. For me, it has been a game of trial and error. However, if you have had acid reflux or heartburn for a while now, make sure to visit your doctor.
