Florida Man Wakes Up With Amnesia, Speaking Swedish

It?s a story that sounds like it came straight from Hollywood ??

Four months ago, a 61-year-old Florida man was found unconscious in a Motel 6 in California. When he woke up, he had no idea how he got there or who he was ? and he was only speaking Swedish. (Via The Desert Sun)

According to the IDs found in his motel room, his name is Michael Boatwright, but to this day, he?s sure his name is Johan Ek. (Via USA Today)

Boatwright?s driver license says he?s from Florida. He reportedly lived much of his life in Sweden, and officials say he got his Masters from Stockholm University.?(Via?CNN)

So it?s believed he did speak Swedish before he was found unconscious. (Via WGME)

When doctors told him he had five tennis rackets in his room, he couldn?t tell them why. When they showed him photos of himself with other people, he didn?t recognize them or even himself. And according to his social worker, he doesn?t remember how to exchange money or take public transportation.

?Michael Boatwright doesn?t remember his two ex-wives or his son. Boatwright is a 61-year-old Navy veteran and has been diagnosed with Transient Global Amnesia.? (Via KXTV)

This rare type of amnesia is triggered by physical or emotional trauma and can last for several months. It?s characterized by memory loss, sudden and unplanned travel, and the possible adoption of a new identity.?(Via?WTOC)

Boatwright only has $180 to his name, which complicates his treatment and living situation. He has a few Chinese bank accounts, but he can only access one ? and it only holds $7.

The Desert Sun reports his sister had been found living in Louisiana, but she told the outlet she hadn?t spoken to her brother in about ten years. She said he?d quote ?always been just a wanderer.?

He?s reportedly in good health, besides the amnesia, of course. But his doctors are still trying to figure out what happened to make him this way.
